Yet another of my enormous wiggly line drawings. This one took about two days, and was done with only pencil and pen; no measuring tools. For the first time, I tried to make it actually resemble something; ocean waves. I tried to put in a lot of curls at the top and more pointy rushing-wave-shapes near the bottom. Also, this is the first time I tried to avoid straight lines completely. I needed practice inking curves anyway.

After matching the right side of the pic, I was astonished to see a surprisingly clear Chinese-dragon-esque face appear. Can you see it too?

I'm sure you could see a shitload of things in this if you looked long enough. I sort of see a toucan.

The first face is probably the Chinese dragon one you were talking about; it's in the lower-right/left area, with widely-set nostrils, wider than the eyes, suggesting a dragonish snout foreshortened and larger in perspective. The second face is just above dead center (and mirrored below), and features a great big smile that extends, cartoonily, upward to just aside the eyes, with a curl around down.

Also, the wood panel on the bottom of the top bunk in my dorm room at UW, which I saw every time I laid down in other than pitch darkness for three years, had several shapes that my human pattern-matching brain parsed as familiar things. I can't remember any but one, which I thought looked kind of like a 'taur of some sort.

If I dug around in my photos directory, I could probably find the picture I took of it on the last day before I moved out, and highlight the areas I saw.

Interestingly, the second face you mention is actually the one I was describing! I hadn't seen the other dragon now, but I do now. Cool!

I've had similar experiences with the tile on my bathroom floor. I've seen a toon fox, and busty bird girl, among other things. Unfortunately, I never seem to be able to find them again when I go to get something to draw them with.

It's called pareidolia, if I haven't already told you. Google "Badlands Guardian" for a stunning example of it.

The word sounds familiar; you probably have told me about it before.

And the Wikipedia article on it shows many hilarious examples, such as a shocked cardboard box, and was conveniently linked to from the page on the Badlands Guardian. :D
