I'm of two minds about the amputee fetish. On the one hand, I know many real amputees find 'devotees' creepy, and see it as being reduced to just their disability. I can certainly understand and empathize with that. Then again, I can't control what my mind looks at and finds visually appealing. In this case, I'm not only fascinated with anatomy, I'm also drawn to imperfection; I find it infinitely more interesting than flawlessness. And in the case of handicapped characters, it's not the helplessness that interests me (Far from it!), it's appreciating a body shape that isn't 'normal' and imagining what everyday life must be like with it.

And too, why should a physical defect stop a person from being beautiful? Can't an imperfection draw attention to the beauty surrounding it?

(Plus, I know people get eaten by boa constrictors in real life, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying vore. Just because something can happen shouldn't prohibit people from fantasizing about it.)

That, and I find prosthetics endlessly fascinating. The craftsmanship, the design, the engineering that goes into these incredible devices to replicate how the body naturally works... It's mind-boggling. I think they look as cool as any other incredibly advanced technology, like cars or electronics. And those wheelchairs that can walk up stairs!! Holy shit!!

Anyway, I was thinking about all this stuff a few nights ago and decided to see what Gadget would look like missing some bits. If she doesn't seem to mind her condition too much, it's because I let her know her hand and leg would be restored good as new by the next drawing. I like the idea of a character letting their creator do all sortsa weird stuff to them because they know he'll return them back to normal afterwards. ;)

I was thinking some mechanical mishap of misfortune took place.

Nah; she'd never be so careless. She was probably just playing around with Torsomax.

This is a good reminder to those who don't think about people with disabilities. Not everything can be picture-perfect. =x

I know I've mentioned this to someone either here or on FA before. Double amputee Aimee Mullins has made a career out of facing similar questions: What constitutes a "whole" person? What defines beauty? How can overcoming a disability become something greater?

One time at the movies, I saw a really pretty girl who was missing her left arm, amputated just above the elbow. She seemed to get along well enough, carrying her drink and popcorn, and holding out her ticket to the usher without any problems.

Gadget would probably turn this kind of disability into a superpower. Her missing hand would be replaced by a mechanical hand with tools built in, and her leg would have a foot specifically designed to kick ass...

Oh, absolutely. But then she'd get carried away...

Ugh ! Amputation fetish ! Mr. Alexreynard I have no real fetishes. I feel only empathic pity and revulsion towards an amputation !

Black Pete in the early M.M. strips, was PegLeg Pete, but artists had repeatedly made mistakes as to which side the peg leg was on. So in one story, where Mickey found him working in a lumbercamp, he had TWO legs Mickey, curious, asked him why -and he was told that it was a prosthetic leg that worked and looked just like the real one. The artists and writers no longer made any references to Pete's truncation. In both the  strip and in the films, PegLeg Pete was now Black Pete.

The change did not extend to his personality: he was -and is- still; up to NO GOOD !
