The weapon that built the greatest empire in history, the "Brown Bess" in its various forms served the British military and those of her territories and colonial possessions for more than century. It was also often used against the very nation that created it. Though the origins of the name "Brown Bess" are still unclear, it provided British troops with the firepower needed to construct an empire that spanned the entire globe. Not only did this musket build the British empire, but it also contributed greatly to the creation of the United States of America by being one of the major types of small arm used by the Continental Army and the many American militias. Eventually replace in British service by the Pattern 1853 Enfield with its more accurate rifled barrel and more reliable percussion ignition system, "Brown Bess" soldiered on throughout the 1800s in the hands of foreign armies, rebel fighters, and civilians alike.
