Riding dragons are essentially overgrown lapdragons. They tend to be leggier in addition to larger, their proportions better suited to the role for which they were modified. Originally they were created more or less on a whim at the Bodyshoppe R&D lab, but they were also put to work during the 2049-2050 "Reindeer" charity drive. Few pulled sleighs; most gave rides. The exposure resulted in a few potential customers contacting us, having a reason that justified the larger dragons' proportionately larger appetite. One prominent niche who've found a consistent use for riding dragons is in riding lessons. The pony-sized dragons are extremely good at allaying many beginners' fears; when one's mount is not merely willing and patient but also themselves an instructor, it becomes very easy to start someone off in the shallow end of the pool. Such mounts neither panic, nor respond to inadvertent - and obviously so - commands from a complete beginner that might send an obedient horse into a gallop.
The saddles we developed are different than what's come before, though. The dragon saddles we've made so far, in cooperation with our riding instructors, incorporate a pair of broad, flat stirrups into a similarly broad girth strap. This not only helps distribute the force, but when combined with a grippy poly-gel liner, helps to stabilize what might otherwise be a saddle prone to rotating. The material isn't leather, either, but a rubber-impregnated double layer canvas, with room under the seat for a phase-change pack to help keep our mounts comfortable on hot days. We're looking into making the next batch of prototypes out of vegan-certified, vat-grown leather, which will please traditionalists while keeping animal-rights groups happy.
As part of the test of this batch of saddles, they've grown me up to size, and brought me out here to learn both Western and English riding styles, as an outside observer who can question their assumptions effectively, since I haven't been on the project long enough to look past them all. I almost brought my own bridle, but on the way out, I was dismayed when I realized it was sized for a lapdragon, not a riding dragon, and there's simply no way it would fit me like this.
I'm not sure what I'm waiting for right now. For the PR photos, certainly, but I think they're drawing straws to see if I'm going to be in the group taught Western or English.
