Ray is really important to Caprino, you know.  Sure, Gage(the Victini) is also important, but... Ray's been around since he could remember.  He's almost served as a back-up father of sorts for the boy, considering how busy Caprino's father Donato is helping the Don.

The little Dunsparce doesn't remember it in the way you'd normally call a memory, but his mother Maria was more or less a living shield for him when he was two years old and they fell victim to a carbombing by a rival family.  A keen sense for danger had the Chesnaught woman tuck her child between the armored shell of her kind and her body, which protected Caprino's life at the cost of her own; it left him with faded, blurry images of maternal touch and voice, words he had no name to place with.

Sometimes he has nightmares about things he just doesn't understand.  It doesn't help that he's also come home to an impromptu interrogation of a lower-ranked rival family member courtesy of his father, and even though he idolizes the older Dunsparce and the stories he tells, there's just something unnerving to the boy, a dark contrast to his innocence that brings about an instinctive kind of fear.  Ghosts of a memory twist with darker feelings and sensations; it's not entirely out there if little Caprino has a night terror or two, either.

But there's always Ray.

Being a psychic legendary he could certainly soothe the boy's emotions forcefully, but he never does so.  For nearly every nightmare and bad dream the Dunsparce could have, he's there to offer two broad-fingered hands in a wrap about that little form, gently hugging the shivering child to his own.  Morning, noon, night, sickness or health, it doesn't matter where or when it is; if Caprino needs his support, he will be there to supply it, and will guard the child with his very life.  He's already estranged from the Royal House of Lugia, but that doesn't matter anymore.

When he feels that little hand brush against the side of his beak, the sleeping Dunsparce kiddo mumbling about in the night as he lay next to him... and shift about, pressing head to head together without even thinking and a sleeping flutter of those tiny wings...

Everything's just right.

This child isn't his own, but...

Everything's just right.

That was a nice change of pace. Really enjoyed the short story, and the art is great as well.

That is sooooo sweet! Very heartwarming. Is this developing into a sort of miniseries of sorts where the lil 'sparce interacts with the rest of the family, or mostly him and Ray?

Like everybody else, I adore this~ It's really got a sweet look to it, and it oozes, along with the story, tenderness.

Curious, why not use the first image as the thumbnail; then just have a 1 page submission?
