I don't really see Periwinkle's crying as something that he should stop, be ashamed of, or cover up. In his world, the emotionally crippling masculine numbing of emotion from western culture does not exist. There is no wall to stop it from pouring forth. It flows right through him like a wave. Even though it might be overpowering at times, the joy balances out the pain in a bittersweet way. Life is saturated with color and meaning.

I don't know who Periwinkle is, but I do know that chemists have analyzed the content of human tears under various stimuli and yes, crying can in-fact be a very effective cleanser and healer, with certain, emotion-driven tears actually containing pain-killing chemicals.
