Ranking in at the 4th spot in our countdown it's the haunted house itself! Because with so many monsters you gotta put 'em somewhere! Yes, I know it's not a monster, but I've always liked the stories where it isn't so much that the place is haunted by a malicious spirit but that the house itself is pure evil. Something about that is really chilling and just takes away what little safety there is in such an environment, so with that in mind it can actually be a monster in it's own right, and if that seems lame well... yeah, I admit that it is, but there's a reason I put this thing in! A few days ago I some how realized that I had only 30 entries to the countdown. I don't know how, I could have sworn I had all 31! Since I had the idea of adding in the haunted house rattling around in my brain since the beginning of all this and with little time to spare I put it in last minute.
Now as much of a let down as this may seem, let me explain WHY I used it and specifically gave it such a high ranking. Simply put, it is THE epitome of a Halloween backdrop. Seriously, think about it. Where do most horror stories take place? Haunted houses. What are the main attractions to go to for Halloween? Haunted houses. What, besides jack-o-lanterns immediately paint the word 'Halloween' in your head? Haunted houses! Whether it be a house, castle, mansion, hotel, shack these places are the home of all that goes bump in the night and as this countdown is all about going back to basics and epitomizing what IS the essence and feeling of this holiday, the haunted house IS it! By all rights, it could have won... but that would be a massive let down all things considered so I couldn't, but with most conventional monsters out of the way I figured, given my reasonings that the haunted house would trump them all!
All houses in Purgatory are haunted, but I guess that's pretty obvious when the owner itself is haunted it!
