Here's the sixth major character from "Jason's New Home". Sarah was a laboratory experiment in animal/plant fusion. (Those are vines, not tentacles!) After a series of unpleasant foster family experiences, she comes to live with Mr. Ravensfire and finds a loving home at last.

She wasn't , at the start of the story. She was sick, failing, and weakening from her trek back to her true home -and sanctuary. She had been dying at the hands of her "loving" foster parents ! Talk about disfunctional families (Alex Reynard is good at portraying such !)

She and the kids she lives with, make me think of one of DC's failed teams (the Outsiders -and not the ones you are thinking of). These kids would have been challanged -and DESTROYED on sight- were it not for Doctor Scary who wears a mask so he can live among men as a MAN and not a mismade cyborg alien. He gives them shelter and training. The origins of only 3 of them were described ,and there was NO second issue. They were MONSTERS !
Getting back to basics ... These kids face similar problems and only their mentor saved their lives,sanity, health. I guess that if any survived on their own, they would have become bitter and even turned against people.
