The Mingulay Boat Song as sung by The Beach Bears

Both Sides Now
The Mary Ellen Carter
Imagine a fishing boat out on the Atlantic, west of Scotland. A crew of foxes having spent the entire day from the break of dawn catching the Atlantic Cod runs into a sudden squall at sea, just as they are pulling in their last haul.

They struggle to batten down the ship, and turn her towards home, Mingulay Island, where wives and kits await them. To lift their spirits one of the crew begins to play a bagpipe. Another starts a familiar song. Soon the entire crew is singing, their song helping to coordinate their efforts to turn the ship, and set her on course.

As they approach the shore, they emerge from the squall, to see loved ones waiting for them on the shore.

Heel y'ho boys, let her go boys
bring her head round into the weather
Heel y'ho boys, let her go boys
Sailing homeward to Mingulay!

What care we 'though white the Minch is
What care we for wind and weather?
Let her go boys, every inch is
Sailing homeward to Mingulay!

Heel y'ho boys, let her go boys
bring her head round now altogether
Heel y'ho boys, let her go boys
Sailing homeward to Mingulay!

Wives are waiting, on the bank, boys
Looking seaward from the heather.
pull her round, boys, and we'll anchor
'Ere the sun sets on Mingulay!

Heel y'ho boys, let her go boys
bring her head round into the weather
Heel y'ho boys, let her go boys
Sailing homeward to Mingulay!

ships returning, heavy laden
mothers holding bairns a'cryin
we'll return 'though, when the sun sets
we'll return home to Mingulay!

Heel y'ho boys, let her go boys
bring her head round into the weather
Heel y'ho boys, let her go boys
Sailing homeward to Mingulay!

Heel y'ho boys, let her go boys
bring her head round now altogether
Heel y'ho boys, let her go boys
Sailing homeward to Mingulay!

Heel y'ho boys, let her go boys
bring her head round into the weather
Heel y'ho boys, let her go boys
Sailing homeward to Mingulay!

first the joke... Stop mangling my cousins to play your backing tracks!

Now in all seriousness I enjoy your older tunes like this much better than anything else you do... might be why I enjoy the Christmas music you do so much.

This one is really awesome...especially after 1:09 when the instruments start it.
