I wouldn't call it fatal. The consciousness doesn't end, the personality and memory are just changed.

I call that killing the original mind. Even the Borg just suppress the origanal mind. It is still in there underneath the hive consciousness. Here you are talking about a complete erasure...and murder in a sense.
