Would it be one of those clocks that only has the Hour hand, which would be his shaft?

Well having the hour hand be the balls and the minute hand be the dick gave people the space madness, so probably.

So fucking right on all levels. I see too any people tracing stock photos and auctioning the rough sketches for ludicrous  amounts of money, and the people who get them are royally screwed because the end product barely resembles their character.

I never bought a YCH for the exact reason that every character has a unique shape, not some canned stock photo tracing.

I got a place in a YCH once, and honestly? The picture itself came out a little "eh." It was like they didn't bother to expand the picture's resolution any beyond their initial outlining to compensate for how wide the characters actually turned out to be. The result was something that looked squished up and awkward.

Sufficed to say, I deemed I'd never get one again. But I had to try it once, just to see how it'd turn out.
YukiAkuma

I've never gotten a YCH commission, and I don't think I'll ever try.

Because I'm poor. If I'm gonna waste money on artwork I don't actually need, I'd at least like tog et some say in how it turns out. :P

YCH only makes sense if it's like, really cheap, really fast or something that makes it a worthwhile alternative to getting a regular commission.

An YCH auction is just trying to rip suckers off PT Barnum style. Hey, there's enough people with generic characters and no taste in art around.

Some of them turn out to be the fodder of interesting pose ideas... nothing more. Some turn out rather interesting(look at Jay Naylor's foray into the YCH arena) and others do not. All depends on the artist I suppose.

It was a decent idea that helped consumers back when they were super discounted and stuff, but they've just bloated into absolute nonsense.
There's the nuance the picture doesn't explain.
EtherSaga

I can see the allure in it. I've done some myself. But you're right.

And I think the image does a pretty good job of explaining it lol

Hey, Nori. I don't have any money, but I'm just wondering if you still do MLP stuff now and then? I'm asking because I think that Aero or Glitter would look absolutely adorable in your universe.

It seems as though YCHs are split between "Cheap and lazy" and "expensive fanbait" honestly...
and this really hits the nail on the head honestly.

When I want to commission someone, I want to commission their art. Not a stencil, a unique piece that has had thought, effort, and inspiration put into it. You see some sort of quality of the artist and their work that you appreciate, be it something personal,  profound, or profoundly perverse (as the case may be), and by commissioning, a bit of you comes out and is expressed in turn, through collaboration and a mutual understanding of that je ne sais quoi.

YCH... your character here. That's all it is. stamp. out. done.
I'll compare a YCH to someone running up to you, snapping your photograph, shaking you down for 20 bucks, then running.
MGlBlaze
10 years, 2 months ago
I thought of most YCH's as being rather silly, myself. And then some of them go for an absolutely ludicrous amount of money and it just makes me sad that not only are those things go for so much money, but plenty of people are readily willing to throw a lot of money at something that can end up being rather cookie-cutter.

I guess the main problem is the people willing to buy them, but I don't know...

Sooooo idk why people get up in arms about YCHs because in the long run, it's cheaper for the commission client by reducing confusion and revisions that add time and cost.
Norithics
10 years, 2 months ago
Mmmn, that may have been true at one point (and still true of those who have some scruples), but it would take some serious pretending to say that what's going on with them by and large now isn't exploitive.

Also the art that comes out of it for the most part just isn't as well-considered.

I've seen plenty that are just fine. If you're talking about the approach that a lot of obviously-younger artists are taking with it, like the route taken with adoptables, then yeah I agree that it's terrible and akin to lazy game devs taking Minecraft/FlappyBird/Fad_Game_Template and making shitty clones out of it.

Like, I understand the idea of personalizing a commission purchase. That's totally legitimate, but the fact of the matter is, the YCH template represents a possible pose that you would submit to a client regardless of format, but I guess like revealing the twist in a magic trick, it alienates viewers who often don't realize how long it takes to create content.

Most inks, for me, take on average, 5 to 9 hours, or more, depending on the character count. If I did a YCH that was guaranteed to have few revisions (they aren't always done due to errors, they're sometimes done in response to trying new ideas and overwriting old ones), then the price could go down and the speed could go up.

In most cases, it is a win-win for both parties. It's like. I'm *going* to show the person the sketched pose and ask for confirmation or revision. So I dunno. I understand why people don't like them, but since it's mostly an emotional response that doesn't acknowledge a typical workflow's process, I had to present some kind of argument.

I know I tried to compare it to video games, but there are a few examples, usually in Kickstarters that have incentives for backers to determine the path of the game or insert their own content. Like YCH, they are inserting themselves into the presented template. Some of the higher quality games have definitely not been tarnished, like some of the higher quality furry artists like Sif.

So I dunno, fella. I think YCH is fine and people that are reacting strongly *against* it are being short sighted to nasty business realities, especially if they turn around on the same coin and complain about certain artists being too expensive.
Norithics
10 years, 2 months ago
Sure! No, I can't disagree with any of that. I've made a style that's quick and loose for the purpose of making stuff up on the fly, but I know very well that if I spent any amount of time on stuff it would be much more efficient to be able to frontload the work into templates.

The thing is, I'm not arguing against the concept of YCH. The same as I wouldn't argue against the concept of micro-loans or the concept of outsourced labor- it's just that so many rampant abuses have been made that in the public consciousness it's stopped being a neat new way for people to get affordable commissions and more a straight-up replacement for more traditional commissions at no real discount to the consumer.

So yeah, when they actually are cheaper that tends to be roundly okay. It's just... more and more people are not understanding the concept of this- or simply don't care.

Well, I thought of one other good reason for them. You've got an idea or a sketch of a pose but don't know what characters to finish it as. Its for the undecided.
