With most hyena hybrids being born as fertile hermaphrodites, there has been little need for single male or females. Kiano is one of the few males in Sarki's clan. With the female hierarchy, Kiano and the other males do not have very high status. They cannot breed without permission from one of the higher ranking females or herms and always get last pickings of food. Kiano, however, has gained some status with his skills and knowledge of health care, poisons, and herbs. He is very studious and not a great hunter.
