The sea is a fierce and fickle mistress. It is ever changing, ever shifting, just like time. The sea, like time, does not care. It doesn't care for your hates or desires. Just as something you once loved falls to mediocrity, it washes all things away...when I was younger I was a huge fan of the Soul Calibur series. It was something I was deeply entranced by and no character stood out to me like the dread pirate Cervantes. I'm not exactly sure what chord it struck in me, but it did, but just as quickly as it came it left. The thing I found so cool and fun just drifted away and while I still find Cervantes to be generally cool, I don't really retain interest in the series. It's just an example of how time changes us.
Of course the tides of time can alter things in different ways. From one sailor doomed to sail the sea for eternity to another, the Flying Dutchman was once a feared specter that haunted those at sea...today he is remembered more for a yellow sponge who lives in a pineapple under that sea! For better or for worse the ever changing tides will always alter what we know. From good to bad, feared to funny, important to indifferent, it's just the way things are but the memory of how they once were. What they used to be will always linger in the back of our minds like specters on the waves.
