no.13 - "An timeless entity, endlessly repeating itself"
TRICK: Count Dracula/Bela Lugosi - Dracula (1931)
TREAT: Count von Count - Sesame Street
Throughout the years I have never strayed from giving shout outs to the Universal classics. Those black and white thrillers that shaped horror as we know it today. And while I have never been a stranger to giving these films the respect they deserve, one that has ironically eluded me has been the one that started it all -- Count Dracula!
That's not to say I haven't given the vampire lord his proper dues I've just always veered towards my preferred incarnation of the character, that being from the Castlevania series. Of course where would Castelvania, and in fact horror as a whole even be without Bela Lugosi's immortalizing portrayal of Vlad Tepes all the way back in 1931? Nowhere, that's where! (or at least a very different place)
Cinema wise he is the forefather of all horror and his presence still defines the character to this day...but of course for every big fish there is a leech upon its belly and none more notable then the Count of Sesame Street fame who in many ways both continues Lugosi's legacy and redefines it in his own, felt-laden image. As in many ways I'd say the over-the-top, melodramatic take on Dracula is more indicative of the Muppets these days as Lugosi's legacy slowly fades and Sesame Street's marches ever onward for eternity. From the first ever horror film to child's edutainment, nothing defines the dichotomy of trick and treat better to me.
