Once in a while, I'll become extremely dissatisfied with my art. Not in the "I'm not good enough" way, but rather the "I feel stuck" way. This goes on for a while until I figure out how to break through. It sucks, but it's also a vital part of artistic growth.

Turns out I need a change of style and subject matter - both large problems you understand - but also a more precise direction (or any) as an artist in general. I still have a lot to figure out, but I'm starting to understand, more or less, where I want to go with my art, and it's a loooooong way.

But also a very exciting one! I can't say all of my art will look like this from now on, but I want to pursue this kind of look and feel. I want to transcend my medium, and only use 3d as a tool for making more creative things. This is not my usual painting technique - it's much more elaborate and controlled. Feels like everything I made before was preparing me for this breakthrough. It does still need work and finetuning (it's too noisy, for one). Again, lots of things to figure out, and this is GOOD!

As for the change of subject matter, right now I can say we'll be seeing more surrealism (not shown here), especially this month. But don't worry, I'll still be making the usual stuff.

For now, enjoy. :)

P.S. No, I will not explain this character, not even if you ask real nice. <3

those are called usually     *phases*  or *periods* and one day they will name this in the art history books

picasso, de chirico and magritte (just to name 3) can totally understand this!  :-D

" where I want to go with my art, and it's a loooooong way

" All I have produced before the age of seventy is not worth taking into account. At seventy-three I have learned a little about the real structure of nature, of animals, plants, trees, birds, fishes and insects. In consequence when I am eighty, I shall have made still more progress. At ninety I shall penetrate the mystery of things; at one hundred I shall certainly have reached a marvelous stage; and when I am a hundred and ten, everything I do, be it a dot or a line, will be alive. I beg those who live as long as I to see if I do not keep my word. Written at the age of seventy five by me, once Hokusai, today Gwakyo Rojin, the old man mad about drawing.

I did realize not long ago that what I've been doing until now was just like a baby smearing paint on their parents' bedroom walls, and I'm only now finding that HEY I can do more with this! It doesn't have to be just what it is or what it promises! I can make it my own thing! And now I'm finding out how. :)

Thank you. <3

" HEY I can do more with this!
the moment you started putting 3D / painting versions of your works:
in my eyes the moment you started searching for more.
Aïvi was already an exploration, mainly aesthetic, and now this..

metaphorically, is like adding branches to a tree made of art styles (style for lack of a better word),
and being now able and bold enough to roam here and there...
may the plant grow strong, big and high!

It's really exciting to see your style and subject experimentations and development! This one has such a peaceful vibe and like this gentle dynamic flow. I really want to pet this soft friend, whoever they are!

Not to harsh your vibe or anything, especially since you feel stuck in a rut, but since everyone else is giving positive feedback, I think it may be important to point out how I feel about it. Can't say I'm a fan of this slapping on of a bunch of filters, unless there is an actual thematic reason for it. It does a great disservice to your art, hiding all the gorgeous detail behind something that isn't all that far removed from ai-sloppifying it. Maybe, if you want to get that look and try out something new, you could try painting over the render manually instead, or perhaps look into creating your own post-processing that is more unique to you and the visuals you want to create, rather than these run of the mill filters you've been putting on every image. In my opinion, a little goes a long way, so if you really want THESE EXACT filters, don't apply them to the entire render. I'd love for you to actually explore unique and interesting looks, as unique and interesting as your renders, but this is neither unique nor interesting. You've drained your art of its soul.
You may not want to read these words, but they are heartfelt.
I wish you nothing but success, whatever you do.

The thing is that I felt like my art didn't have much of a soul in the first place, being 3d it just feels too perfect and automatic for what I want to do. Gorgeous details aren't what makes art, I've learned that a long time ago (see impressionism). I don't know what does, but I know this feels right. To me, this feels more alive than anything I've ever done before.

After having rendered this, when I started to do the usual postwork, it immediately stopped sparking joy (sparking joy being the whole point of this piece) because I knew realism wasn't the direction it was meant to go. Gotta listen to that heart voice.

You must also understand that it's not filters that do the work here. It's a few dozen layers derived from render elements, treated with a stroke-scattering brush that I set up and guide to achieve a variety of looks, all working together. It was not simple, took me many hours, and I'm sorry it doesn't work for you, but I must pursue what feels right and makes me happy with my work; otherwise I will just burn out. The only "slap on a filter" moment here was the halftone in the background, simply because I like halftone elements, and it's abstract anyway.

For what it's worth, you can consider this style a chrysalis for whatever comes next, because I know it won't be exactly this all the time, and I'm not ditching my usual style entirely, but I can't grow without change.

Don't worry, this is dope :)
Nothing like that paint smear thing, I can tell you've applied several different things selectively.
It's already looking good and I presume you still have a lot more you can do with the techniques.
