Fifty + years ago (early 1970s), some of my siblings and I poured dish washing liquid into a wide grease pan. Then we bent wire clothes hangers out to make huge bubble wands. With the dish soap used as bubble liquid, and the rounded out clothes hangers used as bubble wands, we managed to make bubbles that were big as cantaloupes and water melons. They were too big for us to blow them. What we had to do was quickly wave the homemade bubble wand, then turn it sideways to seal off a bubble. Sometimes the wind would take the enormous bubbles away and well above treetop level. And the bubbles would sometimes last for nearly a full minute. People who didn't know where the bubbles came from didn't know what to make of them. Sometimes when a bubble popped, we'd notice it would collapse into a small wad of dish soap falling to the ground... almost like the bubble suddenly melted in mid flight. Those of us doing them were teenagers back then, and we all got a good laugh at the antics of those huge bubbles.
