Once, he was a prince of Rome.
He grew up surrounded by marble temples, great villas, crowded forums, and the distant sound of marching legions. His name was known among soldiers and nobles, and the golden future of Rome seemed to stretch endlessly before him.
But that world is gone now.
Long ago, the young Roman prince disappeared without a trace. No messenger returned with news of him, no soldier brought his body home, and no grave was ever built in his name. Years passed, then decades, and eventually centuries. His disappearance became little more than an old story — a forgotten mystery from an empire that itself would one day fade into history.
Yet somehow, the prince survived.
Now he wanders through a world he barely recognizes.
The mighty Roman Empire he once knew has disappeared. Ancient roads still cross the countryside and ruined Roman walls can still be found beneath newer towns, but the people living among them belong to another age. Castles rise where Roman fortresses once stood, knights have replaced the legionaries, and new kingdoms rule lands that were once governed from Rome.
On a cold winter night, the long-lost prince finally finds shelter inside a small medieval tavern.
He sits quietly at a wooden table near the warmth of the fire, wearing his old Roman armor beneath a heavy red cloak. A sword rests before him — one of the few remaining possessions connecting him to the life he once knew.
Outside, snow falls over the rooftops of an unfamiliar village.
The people around him see only a mysterious foreign traveler. His armor looks ancient and unusual. His manner of speaking is strange. Nobody recognizes the symbols he carries, and certainly nobody believes that the lonely stranger sitting among them could truly be a prince of ancient Rome.
For him, however, every unfamiliar face is another reminder of how much time has passed.
He remembers Rome as it once was: alive, powerful, and seemingly eternal. He remembers the people he loved, the soldiers who once protected him, and the home to which he always believed he would return.
All of them are gone.
So he remains at the table, staring silently into the distance while the fire crackles beside him.
He may still carry the blood and dignity of a Roman prince, but there is no throne waiting for him anymore. There is no palace to return to and no family left to welcome him home.
He is a man from a forgotten age, stranded in a world that has moved on without him.
But his story did not end with Rome.
Perhaps somewhere among the ruins, forgotten roads and ancient legends of this new medieval world, he will discover what happened to him — and why fate allowed the long-lost Roman prince to return.
