There was a time back in the golden age of comics where diaper-clad cartoon animals were actually fairly common. I honestly wish there were still just as many today. Still, I decided to doodle two of them for a pic.
The first is the Cub reporter, who appeared in Animal Fair comics by Fawcett comics. He also had stories in Hoppy the Marvel Bunny #10 and Atomic Mouse #12. As the name implies, he is a reporter, constantly getting into shenanigans to get his story. Many have to wonder why this reporter runs around in a diaper, but it turns out that “Cub Reporter” is an actual term and they likely added it to emphasize on the “cub” part. One of my favorite stories of his involves him being knocked out by the bad guys, who take his safety pin to try and prevent him from following them.
The other is Tuffy from Tom and Jerry. More specifically, it’s Tuffy’s original design when the first Tom and Jerry comics debuted in “Our Gang comics”, long before Tuffy’s first appearance in the cartoons. Tuffy was virtually identical in design to Jerry, the lone difference being the fact he wore a diaper. Despite this, he was by no means a baby. As he mentions in the pic, he has dated an adult mouse before and smoked in one of the comics once as well. In the instances where he loses his diaper, he expresses disdain for being naked and even ranks his diapers by quality, refusing to leave them behind, meaning he likely wears them for modesty’s sake. After the appearance of “Nibbles” in the cartoon “The Milky waif”, Tuffy’s design was altered to make him resemble Nibbles, and the two characters basically combined, eventually renaming Nibbles as Tuffy in the future appearances. After his makeover in the comics, Tuffy cared less about modesty and could be seen in several issues doing fine whenever he lost his diaper. My favorite scene involving classic Tuffy was in the very first comic, where he accidentally sat down on fly tape, as Jerry tried to pull him off, the safety pin popped undone and Tuffy was yanked out of his diaper, to which he immediately said he had to run home for some clothes.
I attempted to use a “Newsprint” distortion from GIMP to try and make it look similar to the way the comics appeared, but it didn’t really look right. This version of the pic is available on my Inkbunny account.
Visual Description:
On the left is the Cub Reporter. He is a short light brown bear with white gloves, a green short sleeve business short, a green fedora, and a white cloth diaper held up with a gold safety pin secure on the rear (oddly, he had a flap on the front of the diaper as well). He is holding a note pad and red pencil while saying “I don’t do bathroom breaks, that’s how I’m always able to get the scoop!” while looking over his should at the camera with a happy expression.
On the right is Tuffy. He is a pale brown mouse with a white cloth diaper secured with a safety pin in the rear. He has his arms crossed while stating “I’m not a baby! I dated a full grown mouse and smoked from a pipe before! I wear didies because they’re stylish!” with an annoyed expression looking at the camera.
