Its frustrating that he clearly knows he's in the wrong. Him stopping mid sentence shows his awareness. But he still refuses to accept any responsibility. Shifting the blame once again away from himself and onto Lena. As if its her fault she had the misfortune of coming across him. Even more irksome is that those little fingers in the final panel suggest that his little friend is going to forgive him or something. If she only really knew....

The problem is that he's been living for most of his life at this point a certain way. So much so that to have self-awareness or taking responsibility feels alien to him now. He truly pushed that side of him so far down that it is only now, in this moment, that those thoughts and feelings creep in.
In this case he's talking about Rin as 'that bitch' since, if she never showed up, he coulda fit his way back into Lena's life, and continued on as he had been. Controlling Lena, controlling Val... just ruining their lives for his own selfish reasons that to him fit more in-line with the ideaology of 'might makes right' or 'survival of the fittest.'

I like how the final 'nope' is Rin and not Phila. Like, having that one, last bit of contact with him and realizing what he became before moving on (I know this is in his mind) and he's left looking up at what 'ruined' his life. Or what denied more of his selfish cruelty.
I hope one day, even if it's a short comic, maybe we see Lena post him, raising their very young daughter and addressing her trauma. I'd love to know who was talented, compassionate and had such training to be able to help her even approach it, or if she just looked at Valerie and pushed forward by nothing else then mother's love and desire to protect.

At this point in the comic he's even assuming he's killed her, since this takes place shortly after he's stabbed her, yet she's still an obstacle in his way even in his subconscious. She stopped him that day, but she also helped Lena find the strength to ultimately tell him that enough was enough. Freeing her from his control once and for all. Not just running away from him, but standing up to him.
That story is coming, though there are very small hints in the comic already (there's a photo in her kitchen in the first comic of val as a smol toddler sitting on someone's lap. ;3)

I did rush with the previous chapter so here showing that even with his traumatic past he still choose the abuser route and some more than being a better person than all the adults who failed him, it was a tragic past for him but that doesn't give him a pass, even so some could wonder if Tobias would be a bit better if Philia didn't died and kept being his moral compass.

Alternate futures are definitely fun to think about! By this point he was wayyy too far gone, but before losing Phila? A lot could have changed. Life isn't fair sometimes though, and it's up to us to decide what the hardships we go through make of us. A story itself can be sad without us sympathizing with the evil in it, and i'm glad most people are getting that message. :3
