It was good to experiment. It was an opportunity to learn. Take something you already knew, and change some of the process or add something new to see how it would turn out. The result might not always be good, but the experience gained always was.
Experimenting could be done with many things. Cooking. Cleaning. Building something. Gardening. Even the process of learning. People often experimented without even being aware of it. Doing something they had learned, or observed from, their parents or other family, but doing it slightly differently due to something they had read, or heard from others. That was already an experiment.
In Bunny Meadows, on the campus of Bunbun College, on the third floor of apartment building 2B, a pair of housecat twin sisters, Lillian and Melissa Baumgarten, knew all about experimenting. Experimenting had brought them into the intimate relationship they had with each other. Getting tips and tricks from their mother Martha, and applying them to each other with variations to find out what worked better for either of them; experiments.
They enjoyed experimenting. Melissa studied Auto Mechanics, and experimented with her old diesel BMW 324d. Lillian studied law; not much room for experimenting there, but she experimented with gardening and cooking.
Weekend. Two free days, which the twins always spent at their mother's house. Lillian brought her latest experiment to Memory Lane. A homemade Battenberg cake. She needed her mother's opinion. Martha made tea, Lillian cut slices of the colorful checkerboard square spongecake. She looked at her mother expectantly as Martha tried the cake, but her ears drooped at the face her mother made.
"Is it not good, mom?"
"It's very sour, angel," Martha said, washing down the bite with a big sip of tea.
"What did I do wrong?"
"I don't know, angel, what did you do?"
"Well... I didn't have almond extract so I used two teaspoons of lemon juice instead of one and a half, and I couldn't find apricot jam so I used lemon marmalade."
Martha smiled.
"There's your answer, angel. Too much lemon. With things like these, it's better to follow the recipe."
Experimenting could be fun. The result, however, was not always good.
