While Elyssa would join dance under the influence and auspices of her father's disco, Hazel's inspiration came from a much different source. Though "before her time" and an "old movie" by the time she saw it at the ripe old age of 6 (we're talking around 1995/6 time frame), Flashdance left an indelible mark on the young girl's psyche. She knew, without a single doubt, what she wanted to do when she grew up.
She spent the next few months driving her parents crazy practicing her "dancing" around the house before her exhausted mother finally enrolled her in proper dance classes. It was there that she eventually met Elyssa and, learning they were both attending the same school the next year, strove to become friends with her. It was a bond that would last a lifetime.
----- And the other half (or "bookend" as LuthienNightwolf likes to call them) of the dancing duo's focus. Elyssa's interest in dance was always something more to connect with her dad more and was driven by disco and 70's flair. Hazel's life, however, until her college years and transitioning into ballroom dance, was inspired by 80's energy and an innate love for the art.
Knowing that, I also realized that I've never actually had anything tying the two together aside from me saying they were friends. So while this... technically still doesn't portray them together, the themes riffing off of each other does at least help bring them together a bit more.
