I wonder if one day we might see an alt future where Phila survives and it results in Tobias becoming different. She was his angel and I dare say, was certainly his love. Kids do fall in love, hard love that people forget. There's a reason everyone adores stories about couples who knew each other from the time they were in diapers and kept in contact even when life tried to split them apart, becoming not just friends, but sealed to marry each other the minute they could.
I think this is the greatest heartbreak of Tobias. He had the one love who reached out to him first and she was not just taken, but clearly died a deep, painful death in the face of sexual trauma and brutalizing. He never even got to hold her hands and say goodbye.
Yet, in his journey, I think his heartbreak cut him off from any ability to heal and not become a monster himself. Likely anyway.

What's fascinating is that there's always a sort of 'butterfly effect' when it comes to things like this. If Tobias got to escape that place with Phila and become a different person, then everyone else's path changes too. Valerie wouldn't have been born. Steph wouldn't have met her best friend that day. Rin would never have saved the girls in the woods, or met Lena.
In a way, this isn't just a story about Tobias' past, it's the start of many stories that came after~

Truly if a thing like purgatory would exist, then this reality would be the closet thing to it imaginable. No way out in either direction. You are neither able to exist in heaven nor hell. You are just meant to sit in the eye of the storm in a dual world and struggle. And maybe if you struggled just the right way and the right amount, you will earn yourself the bliss of being able to rest properly at the end of it.

Tragedy "sells". Its a useful motivator for characters and a good way to make character if not relatable at least pitiable. Plus given the demographics of this site it makes perfect sense to use whats popular to tell your dark story.

I lament that this little bit is as short as it is.
I yearn for the much slower, longer, and deeper story between the two to really get a strong attachment to them and their relationship. That makes the results more devastating to me. It's very "summarized" here, and that's understandable considering it's in a comic form. But the narration coming from knowledge makes it a little more predictable and doesn't quite cultivate the emotional investment necessary for me to really feel the effects to their fullest, unfortunately.
I've felt this same thing with my own stories, but since they are in text form I had the ability to go in and flesh those parts out a lot more.

Yeah, it's one of those things where like... if I was the 'narrator' telling the story, it'd be different. If the story was about them specifically, it'd be different. But it's Tobias who is narrating. Tobias who doesn't want to dwell on it, and get through it quickly, so feels sort of rushed. :p
