I wonder if Redberry and Greenpone knew each other well. And if Redberry felt envious he never made it into Celestia's school and he figured following the cult was his way to guarantee a position and the tutelage he felt he was denied. I wonder if he felt like he let down anyone he cared about that he failed to get into Celestia's school. It would explain why he's desperate to prove himself as gifted to the point he got sloppy where it counts. Too focused on proving his excellence not focused hard enough on eternal pursuit of it.
