Happy Fourth of July!

There are a number of ideas the United States of America has represented in it's 250 years, and one of those ideas is the opportunity for freedom--the kind of freedom some in this world live without.

This is not Mark.  Rather, this is "Piter", his grandfather, cerca 1942. Piter was a german youth at the end of World War 2, and at the time, his country was a toxic, destabilized dictatorship losing a war, and losing it's sanity.  when he was fifteen, Piter ran away from an abusive home and, after striking out on his own across war-torn Europe, finds himself among western refugees... bound for America.  Coming to this country gave Piter opportunities for more than just a 'job'-- he was able to begin a family of his own, in a life much happier than his old one in Berlin.

Today, I don't just celebrate the 'birthday' of my country, I celebrate the ideas behind this country's founding, and what those ideas have meant to many.
