The new school year begins a couple weeks after the mall trip. Tiki had been talking with Kody when he could, over the phone mostly. When school starts, Tiki feels emboldened that comes from having someone believe in him. So when he gets assigned homework, Tiki actually really tries to do it (for the first time). Primarily that he could show Kody what he can accomplish... The fox cub is a bit eager for approval.
Some of the concepts he's learning, introduction to fractions, are a bit of a struggle. So when Tiki calls Kody again, he takes the initiative to ask for help. Kody starts to help over the phone, and this becomes a regular thing. Tiki's parents sees it as free tutoring, so they allow Tiki more phone access.
Tiki is doing better in school, has new clothes bought for him, and despite the toxic approach of his parents (wanting to keep Tiki home for "safety" while being bullied by his brothers), they appreciate that someone is helping Tiki, and that Tiki isn't acting out. They are skeptical of Kody but haven't said anything directly yet. Kody uses the excuse that it's nice to have a little brother (since he only has sisters), and the parents seem to buy that.
Kody is becoming a more regular in Tiki's life.
