A few weeks passed. Every night, after the villagers were asleep, Sonic would sneak out and go visit Shadow in Lunaris, where the two of them would talk and bond, slowly getting to know each other. And secretly, just as Sonic's love for the nightwalker king grew stronger, so too did Shadow begin to explore his feelings for the blue hedgehog.
One night, the two of them sat in the castle garden together. The numerous flowers surrounded them with a veil of floral perfume as they looked up at the night sky. Sonic found a moment of courage and scooted closer to Shadow, their hands brushing against each other. To the blue hedgehog's surprise, the dark one smiled at the gesture and wrapped his arm and angel wings around him, pulling him even closer. Shadow could see Sonic blushing at their closeness, despite the blue one hoping otherwise.
"It's a beautiful night." Shadow lifted Sonic's chin up to look him sweetly in the eye. "But not as beautiful as you, Sonic."
The blue hedgehog's mouth fell open, giving Shadow the opportunity to close the gap between them with a gentle kiss. Sonic couldn't move-he'd been fantasizing about this moment since the night they met, but he didn't think it would go like this. He didn't even know that Shadow had feelings for him, too. He stared at Shadow as he pulled away, bleary eyes shining with love.
"Shadow, I..." Sonic began, but didn't know what else to say.
"Having spent so much time with you, I eventually picked up on your feelings for me." Shadow explained. "I've always liked you, Sonic, ever since the night I saved you. But when I found out that you were in love with me, I started to think about my own feelings for you," He smiled as he held Sonic in his arms, "and I realized just how much you mean to me. I love you, Sonic."
The blue hedgehog was completely lovestruck, tears forming in his eyes as he returned Shadow's smile and threw his arms around him, laughing with joy. Shadow took Sonic's hand and led him to where the moonlight was at its brightest, illuminating the two of them as they kissed lovingly.
Another month passed with the two hedgehogs dating in private, not wanting Soleil Village to know about them yet. But one day, as Sonic and Aleena saw off the hunters, the chief decided to have a word with her son, as they now had a moment of privacy on the village outskirts.
"So, Sonic," Aleena began, "I noticed that you've been particularly happy recently. Like you have something to look forward to every day. May I ask what's gotten you so spirited?"
Sonic chose his words carefully, trying not to give away his relationship with Shadow. "It's just that I've learned to be thankful for what I have." he explained. "I've got all my friends and family here in the village, what more could I want?"
"I see." Aleena said dubiously, side-glancing at him with raised eye ridges. "Perhaps you could want romance as well? With a certain nightwalker king?"
Sonic's eyes widened. He stuttered as he tried to deny that he was dating Shadow, but sighed with defeat as he realized that there was no point in lying, he'd already been caught. "How did you know about us?" he asked.
"I wanted to find out what made you so happy, so I followed you to the kingdom you've been visiting," Aleena explained, "where I found you being affectionate with its king. I've been waiting for a chance to tell you in private ever since then."
"I'm sorry I didn't tell you, Mom." Sonic said shamefully. "I wanted to, it's just that...our people are afraid of the unknown. I was scared that if they knew about me and Shadow, they wouldn't approve of us, and neither would you."
Aleena gently touched Sonic's arm. "Sweetheart, as a mother, I value the happiness of my children." she said. "And ever since you and Shadow started dating, you've been happier than I've ever seen you. I kept you, your siblings, and the villagers in our territory because of the dangers out there, but now I see that going out and exploring has done you some good."
She gave her son a hug. "I can tell that Shadow is the perfect partner for you, Sonic, and the two of you have my blessing."
Sonic was relived as he returned her hug. "Thanks, Mom." he said happily, only for it to turn to worry as a thought occurred to him. "Will the villagers accept us, too?"
Aleena was quiet for a moment. "Give them a chance, dear." she said. "I'm sure they will when they see how good he is to you."
After building up his courage, Sonic convinced Shadow to come to Soleil Village to meet their people. Sure enough, the villagers were initially quite weary and untrusting of the nightwalker king. But as Aleena said, they eventually relaxed when they saw that Shadow meant no harm, and how sweet he was with the chief's son. It was a great relief for the both of them to no longer have to keep their romance a secret.
One night, Shadow came to Aleena in need of a favor.
