Sonic was raised in a village with his brother and sister, Manic and Sonia, by their mother, Aleena, the chief of the village. Their people feared the unknown, and Aleena cautioned them and her children about the dangers that lurked outside their territory, and forbade anyone from leaving it.
But Sonic, ever adventurous, was not content with his quiet village life and hungered for a thrill. He did not want Aleena to know that he disregarded her warnings, so he began sneaking out of the village at night and exploring the outer boundaries of their territory, returning before dawn.
In no time at all, Sonic had taken in what little sights there were to be seen beyond the village, and he was still not satisfied. He wanted more places to explore, more adventures to embark on, more new faces to meet. And so, one night, he took an even greater risk than before and traveled farther than he ever had.
A few miles east from his village, Sonic was excited as he came across a kingdom. Even at this late hour, most of its denizens were out and about. Each of them took on the appearances of vampires, werewolves, angels, demons-creatures thought to be mythical. Creatures that the people of Sonic's village feared, but the blue hedgehog was amazed by.
He snuck up to the castle, curious about the royal family that ruled this kingdom. He could see a dark figure appearing on the front balcony, but he wasn't looking where he was walking, and he stumbled and fell into the castle's moat.
He screamed and thrashed in the water, never having learned to swim. He called out for help, hoping that someone would hear him, before he sank below the water. His eyes stung and his chest ached from the lack of air. The last thing he saw before his vision went black was the dark figure from the balcony diving in and swimming towards him.
Sonic's eyes popped open as he coughed up the water trapped in his lungs. He was soaking wet and shivering from the cold of the water and his near drowning. He finally got a good look at the person who saved him as he lifted him up, and his wet cheeks warmed with a blush at the sight of him.
The most handsome, striking hedgehog Sonic had ever seen. Fur as black as the night, streaked with red, eyes like rubies. A gold crown atop his head, vampire wings spread out behind him. His attractive face showed concern for Sonic as he cradled him in his lap.
"Are you alright?" he asked, his deep, smooth voice instantly calming Sonic down from his shock.
Sonic didn't respond at first, as he was captivated by the hedgehog's appearance. But he shook himself out of his trance and scratched his cheek shyly, a gesture unusual for him.
"Y-Yeah, I'm fine now." he said. "Thank you for saving me."
"You're welcome." The black hedgehog smiled-it wasn't a big smile, but it made Sonic's heart flutter. "I'm Shadow, the nightwalker king of Lunaris. What's your name?"
"Sonic. I'm from Soleil Village, I'm the son of its chief."
"Soleil Village? That's quite far from here." Shadow helped Sonic to his feet. "Come inside and relax for a bit. You've had quite a scare just now."
Shadow called for two of his subjects, ordering one of them to bring him a towel to dry Sonic off, and the other to bring tea to the first floor sitting room. After Sonic dried off the moat water, Shadow led him through the castle, and it was the fanciest place the blue hedgehog had ever been in. It was nighttime, so the inside was nearly dark, but the ebony walls, exquisite furniture, and golden heirlooms were quite pleasing to look at.
Their tea was waiting in the sitting room, the silver tray placed on a coffee table in between two velvet couches facing each other, where the hedgehogs sat as the king poured for them. Sonic took a sip from his cup, the hot herbal brew warming his chilled inside.
"So, what are nightwalkers?" he asked Shadow.
"We're supernatural beings who can take the forms of many mythical creatures." Shadow explained. "Lunaris is populated entirely by them. Some of us are nocturnal, but most of us-myself including-are active during the day as well, although our powers are weaker during that time."
"Wow, your kind sounds amazing." Sonic said, his eyes bright with awe. "I've always been fascinated by the unknown and what lies beyond my territory, but my fellow villagers are afraid of it. That's why my mom, the chief, forbade us from traveling outside of our territory. But I love adventures and the rush of taking risks, and I couldn't stand being cooped up in the village all the time. So, I started sneaking out at night to explore the borders of our territory.
"But once I saw everything there was to see nearby, I still wasn't satisfied. I wanted more, I wanted to see new places and meet new people. So, I traveled farther until I found Lunaris, and well, here I am."
"I see." Shadow said. "You sound quite different from your fellow villagers." He smiled. "I've always liked those who are different."
Sonic's heart skipped a beat. "Heh, yeah." he said awkwardly, trying not to fidget.
The blue hedgehog finished his tea and stood up. "Well, I guess I should be getting back." he said. "Thank you for this, Your Majesty, and again for saving me."
"You're welcome, Sonic." the king said kindly. "And please, call me Shadow. Perhaps we can meet up like this again?"
"Yeah, sure. I'd like that." Sonic shyly ran his fingers through his quills. "See you later."
As Sonic hurried back to Soleil Village, he reflected one what a night he had. He almost drowned, but he was saved by the king of a fascinating race that turned out to be real-quite a handsome king, at that-and he discovered a new kingdom. His heart skipped at the thought of seeing Shadow again, hopefully soon.
Sonic was also surprised by how fast he'd fallen for him. But he decided not to tell anyone back home about their meeting. Knowing their fear of the unknown, he couldn't take that chance.
But he hoped that, one day, he wouldn't have to keep his love a secret anymore.
