Tawny the Marill has dedicated most of her life to a single impossible question: What caused the Great Shift? The event reshaped the world entirely, transforming Pokémon into the humanlike societies that now exist across every region and culture. For most people, the Shift is simply accepted as history—a distant, almost mythological turning point buried beneath generations of adaptation. But Tawny refuses to treat it as unknowable fate. To her, something that monumental had a cause, and causes leave traces.

Background/History

An academic by nature rather than status, Tawny spends her days buried beneath fragmented records, contradictory oral histories, and ancient folklore dismissed by more conventional scholars. Her work sits in an uncomfortable space between science, mythology, and speculative anthropology, which has earned her equal amounts of fascination and criticism within academic circles. Some view her as brilliant. Others think she’s chasing fairy tales.

Her most controversial hypothesis centers around Jirachi.

Tawny believes the Great Shift may have originated from a wish made upon a Jirachi—one powerful enough to alter reality on a global scale. The theory sounds absurd even to her at times, but the deeper she digs into surviving accounts, the more recurring anomalies she finds. Ancient texts describing “stars that answered longing,” abrupt societal discontinuities, and impossible biological transitions all point toward intervention rather than natural evolution.

The flaw in her theory is also what obsesses her most: Jirachi should not possess the capability to permanently rewrite the structure of the entire world. That contradiction consumes her research.

Tawny doesn’t blindly believe her own conclusions; in fact, she spends much of her time trying to disprove herself. She cross-references myths against geological records, compares linguistic shifts across isolated cultures, and hunts for consistencies hidden beneath centuries of distortion. Her curiosity is relentless, sometimes to the detriment of her own wellbeing. She’ll lose sleep over a single mistranslated phrase or spend days chasing obscure references most others would dismiss immediately.

Socially, Tawny can come across distracted or overly analytical. Conversations often derail into tangents as her mind races ahead connecting ideas faster than she can verbalize them. Yet beneath the academic intensity is genuine wonder. The Great Shift fascinates her not because of the power involved, but because of what it says about identity, transformation, and the fragile structure of reality itself.

The possibility that the entire modern world began with a single wish both terrifies and captivates her. Because if reality was rewritten once… what’s stopping it from happening again?
