Thomas almost never complained, which is how Kenji knew something was really wrong. The moment he stepped into the room and saw Thomas curled under the blankets, hoodie half-zipped and ears drooping, his chest tightened with worry.
“Hey,” Kenji murmured, setting a paw on Thomas’s forehead. “You’re burning up.”
Thomas blinked up at him, eyes glassy but still trying to muster that small, stubborn smile. “It’s just a cold… I’ll be fine.”
Kenji didn’t buy that for a second.
He fetched a cool towel, pressed it gently to Thomas’s forehead, and tucked the blankets around him like he was wrapping a fragile treasure. Thomas let out a tiny sigh, half relief, half embarrassment.
“You don’t have to fuss over me,” Thomas whispered.
“Too late,” Kenji said, settling on the edge of the bed. “I’m already fussing.”
He brushed a thumb along Thomas’s cheek, feeling the heat radiating through his fur. Thomas leaned into the touch without thinking, exhausted and trusting. Kenji stayed like that for a moment, just grounding him, letting him know he wasn’t alone.
When Thomas shivered, Kenji shifted closer, letting his warmth spill across the blankets.
“You always take care of everyone else,” Kenji said softly. “Let me take care of you today.”
Thomas’s eyes softened, tired, grateful, a little vulnerable.
“Okay,” he breathed. “Just… stay here.”
Kenji smiled, gentle and sure.
“I’m not going anywhere.”
And for the rest of the afternoon, he didn’t, keeping watch, changing the towel, brushing Thomas’s hair back when he stirred, and humming quietly whenever the fever made him restless. The world outside could wait. Right now, Thomas needed him, and that was all that mattered.
