The cathedral was too quiet.
Kenji crouched low behind a fractured pillar, the pink-and-black tactical suit hugging his frame as the stained‑glass windows bled colored light across the floor. Dust drifted through the beams like falling embers. Every sound, every breath felt amplified in the hollow space.
He tapped two fingers to the side of his mask, activating the visor overlay. A soft green shimmer swept across the room. No movement. No heat signatures. Just the echo of his own heartbeat.
“Figures,” he muttered. “They always send me in after the party’s over.”
He moved forward, silent and precise, boots barely whispering against the stone. The mission was simple: retrieve the encrypted drive hidden somewhere inside this abandoned sanctuary. But nothing about the place felt abandoned. The air carried tension, like the building itself was holding its breath.
Halfway down the aisle, a glint caught his eye, metal, tucked beneath a broken pew.
Kenji slid into a crouch, lifted the object, and smirked. The drive.
“Too easy.”
A soft click echoed behind him.
Not too easy.
Kenji rolled aside just as a burst of energy scorched the floor where he’d been kneeling. He landed in a low stance, eyes narrowing as a shadow stepped from behind the altar, tall, armored, and clearly expecting him.
“So you’re the one they sent,” the figure growled.
Kenji cracked his knuckles. “Guess so.”
The stained glass behind them flared with sunlight as the two squared off, colors dancing across their armor like war paint. Kenji shifted his weight, ready to strike.
“Let’s make this quick,” he said, voice steady, confident. “I’ve got another mission after this.”
And with that, he launched forward, silent, sharp, and fearless.
