Kenji had absolutely not planned on ending up at the bottom of the ocean that morning. He’d only meant to test out his new “super‑streamlined, hydrodynamic, totally‑not-going-to-malfunction” diving suit.
Which, naturally, malfunctioned immediately.
One moment he was paddling near the surface, humming to himself.
The next, WHOOSH, the suit’s thrusters kicked in like it was late for work, dragging him straight downward in a pink blur.
“THIS IS NOT WHAT I ORDERED!” he yelled as bubbles streamed past his face.
He braced for impact with the seafloor…
…but instead drifted gently onto a glowing stone path.
Kenji blinked.
Then blinked again.
Because standing before him was an entire underwater city, shimmering pagoda towers, coral lanterns, manta‑ray taxis drifting overhead like lazy blimps. Everything glowed in soft blues and purples, as if the whole place ran on bioluminescent mood lighting.
A tiny crab wearing a tiny hat scuttled up to him, tapped his boot, and pointed to a sign that read:
WELCOME TO BUBBLETON, PLEASE DON’T TOUCH ANYTHING.
Kenji, of course, immediately touched something.
Specifically, a big shiny orb on a pedestal.
The orb lit up.
The ground rumbled.
A giant conch‑shell door opened with a dramatic whooooomp.
Inside was a council of very serious‑looking fish people staring at him like he’d just interrupted their weekly bingo night.
Kenji froze.
They stared.
He stared back.
Finally, one of them sighed and said, “Let me guess… surface dweller?”
Kenji nodded sheepishly.
Another fish elder pinched the bridge of his nose. “And you touched the Orb of ‘Please Don’t Touch This’?”
Kenji nodded again.
A long pause.
Then the elders burst into laughter.
“Ah, you’ll fit right in,” one said, slapping him on the back hard enough to send him spinning in slow motion. “Come on! We haven’t had a tourist in centuries.”
And just like that, Kenji was given a grand tour, manta‑ray rides, bubble‑tea made of actual bubbles, and a museum dedicated entirely to “Stuff That Fell From The Surface.” (He found three of his own lost socks there.)
By the time he finally floated back upward, he was grinning so wide his helmet fogged up.
He’d meant to test a diving suit.
Instead, he discovered a whole city.
And honestly?
That was way better.
