The Nebula Gate pulsed before them, an ancient ring of drifting stardust, humming like a heartbeat. Most travelers kept their distance. Kenji and Milo? They’d been waiting for it to open all week.
Milo crouched, wings spreading wide. “Race you to whatever’s on the other side.”
“You’re literally built for flying,” Kenji shot back, laughing. “But fine. Try to keep up.”
With a single beat of his wings, Milo launched upward, spiraling through the glowing portal. Kenji sprinted after him, diving through the swirling light.
They emerged onto a floating archipelago of crystal islands, suspended in a sky that shifted from deep violet to blazing gold. Strange creatures drifted by like living comets. In the distance, a mountain of obsidian pulsed with a heartbeat‑like glow.
Milo hovered above the ground, wings casting long shadows. “That mountain’s calling us.”
Kenji smirked. “Then let’s answer.”
