Lulo Krai is one of the last living embers of the Wotoko - before the Great Massacre, a tragedy that erased 95% of her tribe in a single night of fire, blood, and screaming wind. She survived only because her illusionary arts—taught to her too early, practiced in secret—were stronger than anyone had realized. When the attackers swept through the Wotoko encampment, she cast an instinctive veil over herself, bending light and shadow until her body became a flickering mirage in the tall grass. Terrified and shaking, she crawled beneath a collapsed grain shelter and held the illusion in place for hours, even as her magic bled her dry. She listened to footsteps squelch through the mud, heard blades dragged, heard familiar voices silenced. She didn’t move until dawn burned the sky, and only the smell of smoke convinced her she was truly alone.

Lulo appears young and bright-eyed thanks to her illusionary gifts, but beneath that crafted innocence lies a constant tension humming in her bones. To cope, she practices small illusions every morning: birds made of light, drifting motes of color, harmless trickery that reminds her magic can create beauty rather than just hide fear. Living with the Waving Grass Tribe has helped her reclaim a sense of belonging; their calm, grounded ways give her space to breathe. Still, she sleeps lightly, dreams sharply, and never truly lets her illusions drop—not until she finds someone she trusts enough to see her as she is: older, stronger, and still healing.
