no.8: Killjoy - Killjoy (2000)

On this day mankind peaked as a society. 25 years ago a movie was bestowed upon us that can only be described as perfection. Citizen Kane? 2001: A Space Odyssey? They pale in comparison to the cinematic masterpiece that is...Killjoy!

All joking aside, the original Killjoy film can only be described as The Room of horror movies. It's so earnestly terrible that I, having been raised on Mystery Science Theater 3000, can't help but adore it. The series would continue to go on with several entries with much more self awareness and while I commend it's horror comedy edge later on they feel a bit...try hard. To me, nothing will top the genuine low budget awfulness of the original and much of this is all thanks to the actor behind the titular Killjoy himself. While the demon clown would be portrayed by Trent Haaga in all subsequent films there is a pure goblin energy that Angel Vargas brought with him in the original film that causes the inherent badness of the movie to loop back around into being amazing. You can tell that despite how terrible the movie is, he's having the time of his life and it saves the movie from just being unwatchable!

Last year I did a countdown all about movie characters. Killjoy was among my choices, but unfortunately I had filled my slots for comical characters with choices I couldn't go without. Thus, Killjoy was put aside till next year, but ironically this would work out as 2025 marks the original movie's 25th anniversary. (That happened a lot this year somehow, all of which without intention.) So I guess we can call this a happy accident, just like the move itself!~
