no.28: Kid Dracula - Kid Dracula (Famicom/Game Boy)

"What is a kid? A miserable little pile of LEGOs on the floor!"

Castlevania is a series very near and dear to my heart. I'd venture so far as to say it's my favorite series of all time, or is within fierce competition with The Legend of Zelda for that title at the very least. Unfortunately after a near 20 year span of doing these countdowns I've kind of run the entire gamut of characters I'd care to show case from the series. Dracula, Simon Belmont, Alucard; hell even a Flea Man and Medusa Head! Who else do I really have left to show case? I mean, I suppose I could do some other Belmonts or even the Morris family, but I feel like that's just sort of redundant. I can't think of any other monsters I'd care to add in either save for Death and he no long counts as I've included the Grim Reaper into two countdowns already and they're essentially the same thing! So, left where I am at the bottom of the proverbial barrel, I have little choice but to go where I have.

Enter Kid Dracula.

I say all this not in condemnation of the games. I think the Kid Dracula games are fine, they're just not exactly my first pick when it comes to things pertaining to the Castlevania series ya know? But I'd be lying if I said I didn't just love Kid Dracula as a character. He's such a great design that let's you know exactly who the character is the minute you see him. A cute, precocious little jest at the vampire trope, so much so that he's hard not to love. He just gives you that feeling of being a little kid on Halloween all over again to the point that I really just prefer Kid Dracula himself over anything to do with his games -- well actually, that's not true. Kid Dracula delivers one of the greatest gaming experiences ever known to man, because where else can you play as the son of Dracula, traipsing around New York City while shooting fireballs at alien UFOs, Spider-Man, King Kong and Jason Voorhees, then go on to compete in a trivia game held by Lady Liberty against a Klansman and a chicken wearing Uncle Same top hats. Nowhere but Kid Dracula, that's where! Be the American that the Japanese think you are my friends, be that American...

(Also it came down between him of Akria Toriyama's Ackman and I felt Kid Dracula deserved it more because people might actually know who the hell he is, unlike Ackman. Not that that's ever stopped me before, mind you but still~!)

Before he faced off against his own father in one of the greatest PS1 games of all time, he went on a cutesy romp to fight monsters, IINNNN SPAAAAAAAACE!

In case you didn't know, the antagonist of Kid Dracula, Garamoth, appears as an optional boss in SOTN.

Oh I'm well aware where Garamoth comes from

Pretty cool way to link the games too, even though Kid Dracula's a non-canon parody.
