no.29: Ro-Man - Robot Monster

I know it's only two days, but I swear it feels like we leave the 30's in October way too quickly. Is it just me? It's probably just me.

In any case, as you may or may not recall, last year's Halloween Countdown was all about the movies. The horrors of the silver screen if you will. While I did my best to showcase all those that I feel deserved a shout out, it's inevitable that with SO many horror movies out there and with only 31 slots to fill, some notable entries are going to slip through the cracks -- but there's always next year, as they say and one such case was absolutely the laughable Ro-Man of Robot Monster fame...or should I say infamy?

Now first and foremost Robot Monster is known as one of the worst movies ever made and rightfully so! The movie is a cheap, awful snooze fest and I'll admit that I'm only aware of it's existence due to an unhealthy obsession with Mystery Science Theater 3000 growing up. This is generally the case for most B-movie affairs for me though. Regardless, I'm not about to say that Robot Monster is some kind of forgotten classic, or some diamond in the rough that was actually good for it's time, because it isn't! In fact, were I to grade it on being a movie alone I wouldn't even consider it. Robot Monster delivers nothing to the world of cinema...save for one thing. The titular 'robot monster' himself, Ro-Man: Extension XJ-2 (Wait...XJ-2? Was he the predecessor to Jenny!?)

To me and my warped mind, Ro-Man may very well be the greatest contribution to monsterdom since Dr. Frankenstein made his creature! There's something so earnest about grabbing a discount gorilla costume and slapping a space helmet on it and trying to make us believe that it's some "robot monster". It's so unbelievably stupid that it somehow turns back around into being genuinely wonderful and I really can't think of anything that better defines Halloween itself. Sure, something truly terrifying is preferable, but sometimes all you've got is a gorilla in a fish bowl and you gotta' work it! Is it good? Not even close, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't love it and I'd be sad to lose more things like it. It's duality of genuine horror and cheesy goofiness that makes Halloween as nostalgic as it is and this big, dumb ape in a helmet will always have a home in my heart!
