Black Hole: The Book of Iratus, Episode 100

Chapter 991

Day 24, and Iratus was on the road again with several others.

The first time he'd ridden in the Humvee, it had been to escape a spider-infested mansion—and he'd never really had time to process how he felt about it. It wasn't too different from riding the motorboat, but after several more rides in the Humvee, Iratus still didn't feel comfortable. Every sharp turn made him instinctively grab onto something, holding on for dear life.

Malignitas was the one driving.

Malignitas: "You afraid of falling out?"

Iratus just sighed at the feline's jab.

Disputatio: "This would've taken a day or two on foot, but thanks to this vehicle and spiral road into the mountains—poof." He gestured dramatically at the expanse ahead: a wide stretch of deadlands nestled against a forest that looked like it had tried to strangle the landscape. "Here we are."

The Humvee descended into a ravine, where the dense forest finally gave way to a barren, flat field. As they drove closer, tall oil extractors came into view—still operational, slowly pumping in rhythmic diligence.

When the vehicle pulled into a cracked, uneven parking lot near what looked like a central building, several figures emerged to watch them. Those carrying weapons stayed back on the steps, waiting silently to see what would happen.

The Humvee rumbled to a stop on a fractured concrete slab, where tufts of grass pushed through the cracks. The air smelled of scorched earth and machine oil. A perimeter of chain-link fencing—half-collapsed and tangled with rusted barbed wire—offered only a flimsy suggestion of protection from the wild beyond.

Outside the fence, the forest loomed dark and watchful. But here, the land had been stripped bare, leveled and worked raw.

The main building ahead stood squat and wide, built like a bunker from reinforced concrete and corrugated steel. Time and weather had left streaks of orange rust bleeding down its sides. Broken floodlights jutted out from the roof, their glass long gone, like blind, empty eyes.

A remnant of a sign stuck crookedly out of the ground—just warped metal now, its lettering long since weathered away. The building's doors had been replaced with thick, hand-welded sheets of metal, and the windows were either coated in grime or reinforced with mesh grating.

To the side, two rust-locked loading cranes stood frozen mid-motion, their arms suspended as though they'd simply forgotten how to move. The oil pumps thudded steadily in the distance, surrounded by workers.

Their faces were streaked with grease, and they wore mismatched armor and scavenged gear—just as weathered and patched together as the facility they tended. Some paused their work to watch the newcomers, cautious but not immediately hostile.

A few children peeked out from behind stacked barrels and old shipping containers, which had been repurposed into makeshift barricades.

The local population was a mix: otterfolk, mousefolk, rabbitfolk, and other scattered species. But it was clear who made up the majority here.

Chapter 992

A tall rabbitman stepped forward, wiping his dirty face with a rag. He stopped mid-step as he got a better look at Disputatio.

Disputatio: "Carmen, I have returned." He gave a small wave.

The two rabbits stared each other down for a moment. Disputatio subtly tugged on the strap of his rifle, Whistleback, clearly a bit nervous.

Carmen: "Out of every fellow rabbit I could've met again... it had to be you?"

Disputatio: "Hey now, you're ruining my reputation."

Carmen shook his head. He had no head fur, just sleek black fur all over, pale blue eyes, and a burn scar near his left eye. He wore a dirty, patched-up jumpsuit that had clearly seen years of use.

Carmen: "I've been stuck in the Nexus Prime for four years, and out of everyone I replaced with a rock... You're the only one the rock actually outperformed."

Malignitas burst into loud laughter, while Disputatio scratched his face in embarrassment.

Disputatio: "Can't we just call that whole repair situation a draw?"

Carmen sighed and shrugged.

Carmen: "Sure. Now—tell me why you've brought strangers to my doorstep?"

Disputatio: "Ah. Allow me to present the lord of Lionhearth."

He gestured toward Iratus, who exhaled and stepped forward.

Iratus: "Greetings, sir. I'm Iratus Lionheart. I've been told you have oil—specifically diesel—and I'd like to discuss trade."

The rabbit rubbed his chin, studying Iratus.

Carmen: "Lord? So what, you have your own land and castle now?"

Iratus: "Uh... yes. Basically."

Carmen: "I see. Well, it's hot as hell out here. Come inside my home, and let's see what you have to offer."

---

Chapter 993

Iratus had already given his pitch. He felt a bit nervous after finishing, especially since the rabbit hadn't moved an inch.

Iratus: "So... yeah. Food and whatever else you need."

The room was dim—straight out of a movie where prisoners get interrogated. The only light came from a small window, its cloudy glass letting in a weak, gray glow. The door was open, and just outside were several workers on break—some of them armed and standing by. Inside the room were only Iratus, Disputatio, and Carmen.

Carmen: "That's it?"

Iratus: "Oh. I'm sorry—are there other things your people need?"

The rabbitman grumbled under his breath.

Carmen: "Guns. All we've got are metal pipes and tools. Almost every gun you see here is out of ammo."

Iratus: "Maybe we could make some bows. Takes a lot of training to use properly, but a ranged weapon is still a ranged weapon."

Carmen: "So that's a no to guns?"

Iratus: "Wait, wait. Bullets."

Carmen raised an eyebrow.

Iratus: "They're only really effective with bolt-action rifles, but... we've been making paper cartridge bullets. They work well enough."

Carmen: "We've got bolt-actions. We'll take five hundred bullets."

Iratus: "Oh. Okay. I think we can make that many fast enough. But... you'll probably have to make the black powder yourself."

Carmen: "Why? Is black powder hard to make or something?"

Iratus: "It's the sulfur—that's the hard part. Potassium nitrate we've figured out how to harvest, and charcoal's easy. Just burn some wood in a sealed metal barrel with small holes—like a primitive kiln. But sulfur? That's a problem. If you've got any volcanic areas nearby, sulfur usually forms near vents or fumaroles as bright yellow crusts or crystals. I'm lucky. I live near a massive hot springs cave complex, so we can collect what we need."

Even Disputatio was listening closely now—this was new information for him.

Iratus: "Potassium nitrate isn't too bad. Bat guano, urine, and wood ash work. Ideally, you make a pit with manure, straw, wood ash, and urine. There's more to it than that, but unless you're planning to do it yourself, I won't bog down the conversation."

Carmen thought about it for a few seconds, expression serious.

Carmen: "I'll ask that you make the powder too. So—how much diesel do you need?"

---

Chapter 994

Iratus asked a few questions—about Purple City, the Gray Masks, and a few other topics—but Carmen didn't have much to offer. He had no idea what Purple City even was, and the Gray Masks had only recently become a problem—until they suddenly stopped appearing.

After the conversation, Iratus found Malignitas yawning as he approached the one-eyed feline near the Humvee. Iratus and Disputatio carried out several fuel cans, and Malignitas helped them load up.

Malignitas: "Wow. That was easy."

Disputatio: "Unlike other kinds of fuel, diesel's the easiest to make. Anything else would be way too complicated for what they've got on hand."

Iratus finished placing his cans into the truck, then turned to Malignitas.

Iratus: "Any kinsfolk come up to talk?"

Malignitas: "Nope. Speaking of which—have they even seen Gray Masks? You'd think those things wouldn't allow a settlement this big to just exist."

Disputatio: "To be fair, they've doubled in size since last year."

Iratus: "Every time the Gray Masks show up, they just vanish again. I'm betting it's because we've been killing off the conduits."

By this time, the three of them were inside the vehicle.

Malignitas: "Do we even know how much area that covers?"

Iratus: "No idea. But if they've been gone this long, then it makes sense that settlements are starting to grow."

Malignitas: "Okay. So what are we giving them in return?"

Iratus: "For this year? I got it down to one hundred bullets with gunpowder. And in exchange, we can take as much fuel as we need—for now."

Malignitas: "Are we sure that's really the deal?"

Disputatio: "Believe me—they've got more fuel than they know what to do with."

Malignitas: "If more settlements start popping up, you'd think they'd be swamped with business."

Iratus: "But how many people have working vehicles? And this is the only other settlement we even know of at least."

Disputatio: "Drifters and the occasional driver are their main customers—and that's not much.'

Malignitas: "I think the real shock is that we haven't run into any roaming monsters or something."

Iratus gave a smirk.

Iratus: "I know, right? What are the odds nothing bad happens when we go anywhere?"

---

Chapter 995

With their fuel secured, Iratus shifted his focus to growing the settlement—expanding gardens, securing more animals, and reinforcing defenses.

Fifty days later, Iratus stood at the border, waiting for Purple City's first trade convoy. When the traders arrived with their carts pulled by oxen, it became increasingly difficult to hide Lionhearth's two Humvees from view. A brief conversation began, and Iratus, caught without a ready lie, decided to tell the truth—or at least most of it.

Iratus: "We can scrounge up enough fuel to travel by car until it goes bad. Then we wait for another Blackest Day to drop in new fuel to salvage."

The man he spoke to was a rough-looking human with blonde hair blackened by oil. His clothes were rugged, built for survival, and bristled with various tools. Two other humans accompanied the trade convoy, but only this blonde man approached to speak.

Blonde: "Lucky you. Any vehicle we get working doesn't last long. But enough of that, I've got a message from Purple City."

Iratus: "Alright, let's hear it."

Blonde: "The leadership wants to know more about Lionhearth—who you are, what you stand for. So, they're inviting your leader and a handful of guests to come dine with us for a day."

Iratus had many thoughts. The first: trap. But the more he'd learned of Purple City, the less likely that seemed. His conversation with Elias suggested the city was dealing with internal division. Perhaps he was being used as a political pawn—to lend legitimacy to a faction. Iratus mentally combed through the possibilities, but he lacked the details to know for sure.

Iratus: "I'd be honored. But I've heard the city's a bit divided these days—two factions in control?"

The blonde man nodded.

Blonde: "Hm, it's more like three now. There was something of a public vote, and now we've got the Crowns, the Councilors, and the Freemen. Things have gotten wild—politically, I mean. Everything else is still pretty peaceful."

Iratus: "Well, since you already know about our vehicles, I can visit anytime."

Nearby, Laedere, Procella, and Malignitas were busy moving boxes, only half-listening to the conversation.

Blonde: "Perfect. Actually, if you could come in eleven days, that would be ideal."

Iratus: "Doesn't it take fifteen days to get back?"

Blonde: "We've got an old steam boat. Took us seven days to load and haul everything here."

Iratus: "Well, now I understand how you made it here so fast."

Blonde: "Yeah. So, everyone's assuming you'll show up. And from what you're saying—you are the leader, right?"

Iratus: "Iratus Lionheart. And yes, I'm in charge of Lionhearth."

Blonde: "Right. Good. Like I said—if you've got working vehicles, come in nine days, and we'll be ready to welcome you."

Iratus shifted his stance slightly, studying the man.

Iratus: "You sure you don't need more time to prepare?"

Blonde: "Not unless you need more time. We've been planning this for a while now."

---

Chapter 996

On the way back from the border, Iratus realized he should have asked a simple but important question: who was he even trading with, if Purple City was divided into three factions?

Malignitas: "What do you think they're actually after, boss?"

Iratus: "There are too many theories I could come up with. But the one I'm leaning toward is that each faction is looking to secure foreign relations. If a faction can be seen as the one engaging with other settlements, it might gain more legitimacy over Purple City."

Procella: "Interesting theory, but I'm willing to bet they're trying to gauge what you—or rather, Lionhearth—is capable of. If they're facing internal instability, the fastest path to unity is a common enemy. That would be us. They just need an excuse to justify war."

Malignitas: "My arch-nemesis is right for once. Always assume people in power are out to lie and cheat their way into more influence."

The hyenaman, Laedere, continued driving, eyes on the road.

Laedere: "Arch-nemesis? What's that all about?"

Malignitas: "Old wounds. Worry not about it."

Once Iratus returned to Lionhearth and shared the news about the upcoming meeting, rumors and speculation began to swirl through the settlement.

Vesper: "From what people are saying, are we sure they're not setting you up for a false flag operation?"

Iratus: "War was already foretold. And honestly, you don't need to be an almost-all-knowing AI to see why. Might as well get it over with, if this is just a ploy."

His wives, as expected, had their own thoughts on the matter.

Ignis: "I wonder if they'll even behave themselves."

Resonantia: "If they catch us in a web of pleasantries, we might not be able to say no to anything—and yet still come off as the bad guys if relations sour."

Aestus: "I say we take this chance to show just how friendly we are. It's hard to hate someone who's always smiling and wishing you the best."

Victoria: "Wow, that's actually a good idea, Aestus."

Iratus: "In fact, I think that's exactly what we should do."

Once Iratus shared how he planned to approach Purple City, the gossip started to shift in tone—people were still wary, but the mood began to lean more positive.

---

Chapter 997

Iratus planned his guest list and gathered the selected individuals in his kitchen over lunch.

Iratus: "First—Resolutio, Salvos, Otiosus. You three will be my bodyguards."

Resolutio: "Naturally. I wouldn't let you go without me anyway."

Otiosus: "It's been a while since I had to guard a VIP."

Salvos: "I don't think I'm as much of a soldier as the other two, but I assume you're bringing me for my nose?"

Iratus: "Wolves have a great sense of smell."

The three gave a salute, pressing their hands to their hearts. Then Iratus turned to the next person.

Iratus: "Deficio. Many nations here value the priesthood enough to bring holy men to formal events. I think having one with me will make my lordship look more official."

Deficio: "And I have a gun arm. Not that I believe the worst will happen at this meeting."

Iratus: "Then, there's one more person I need to take."

He gestured toward his wives, motioning for Victoria to come forward.

Victoria: "Me?"

Iratus: "Rulers have wives. It's just a courtesy sort of thing—to bring my wife."

Victoria (raising an eyebrow): "As opposed to your other three wives?"

Deficio: "Not every nation accepts polygamy."

Iratus: "But they sure enjoy divorce and remarriage."

He paused, collecting himself. His distaste for Earth's disregard for God's law clashed with how others saw his own devotion to multiple wives.

Deficio: "I think it's better to downplay our cultural differences in marriage and appear more like them—like Purple City. The more similar we seem, the easier it'll be to build a relationship."

Victoria: "And me?"

Iratus: "Love, I think you'd fit well at a dinner party."

Her fellow wives offered warm encouragement, and Victoria finally stepped forward with a confident grin.

Victoria: "Then I'm going to charm these people of skin so hard they drop!"

Iratus: "Right. Now, the plan: We may end up staying in Purple City for more than just a day. Events like this often stretch longer than expected, especially with their current political divide. Also, they might be trying to vilify us. We must do everything we can to be respectful and always wear a smile. We'll aim to remain as neutral as possible, but if we find someone, or a faction, that's positively inclined toward us... we'll take it from there."

---

Chapter 998

The time had come to head to Purple City. Everyone was making preparations, and Iratus sighed as he realized he didn't have any regal outfits. He considered his armor, but figured that kind of attire was probably only fashionable on his home planet. From one of the scavenged locations, he'd found formal military wear from his era, and decided it would have to do.

His three bodyguards wore the classic armor of Lionhearth. Deficio wore his sacred tunic and vestments—a white, robe-like outfit with a purple sash draped over one shoulder. Victoria wore simple black pants, but her top was a fitted gray uniform that resembled Iratus's own formal wear.

Victoria: "It's not out of place for how we've lived. We've been fighting monsters and warlords, I say we take pride in our violent victories."

Iratus: "We're going to have to."

He glanced briefly at Victoria's growing belly. She was pregnant again. No words were needed—both knew that her pregnancy could serve as another tool to charm Purple City.

Deficio: "There's one more thing."

The priest stepped forward and produced a gold crown adorned with a large sapphire.

Deficio: "I know your time—our world—doesn't really do monarchs anymore, but in our current situation, I believe we need a symbol of authority to be taken seriously by a foreign power."

Iratus: "Unless they have a problem with monarchs."

Deficio: "For now, let's just say you're the lord of Lionhearth—and this crown proves it."

Iratus: "Alright. Crown away."

Deficio placed the crown gently atop Iratus's head.

Deficio: "Ironic. The lower house of Lionheart was never royalty, never of any value—and yet, with the upper house becoming emperor of our planet, here we are, crowning the lower house with authority."

Iratus: "The upper house was just a man. A slave and a bastard, playing the fool to those who wanted a puppet. Once in power, he became the greatest monarch in history. I suppose the irony is that I, too, am just a nobody—about to play the fool for whatever powers are watching now."

Deficio: "May God be with you."

Iratus: "With all of us… as we walk through the valley of black silver and death."

With that, Iratus, Victoria, and Deficio left the tower for the Humvee. Many people watched their departure. With the crown now resting on his head, Iratus noticed people saluting—or even bowing—as he passed.

As always, he felt embarrassed by such displays, uneasy with being seen as a figure of authority. But now… he actually had to play the part.

---

Chapter 999

Day 83, the day of the meeting. Purple City was undergoing renovations. Once a modern metropolis, it was still partially overgrown—reclaimed by nature during the years when only a small settlement occupied the ruins. But now, with wooden walls and new gatehouses, the city was slowly beginning to look revitalized.

Iratus looked out from the Humvee, expecting a crowd to appear around the corner—but only a handful of people were visible as they drove through the city.

The vehicle was processed and directed down a line until Iratus and his party were led into a parking garage. Makeshift fortifications had been set up inside, and work crews were continuing to reinforce it—a clear effort to secure a reliable shelter for the Humvee.

The weather was starting to cool slightly. Around Purple City, the heat wasn't bad at all. In fact, once Iratus stepped out of the vehicle, the temperature felt quite pleasant, despite the sun hanging overhead.

A human approached to greet them—his name was Rimush. He didn't seem very old—probably in his thirties, though it was hard to tell with humans. He had jet-black hair, worn long and tied into a knot at the nape of his neck. His skin was olive-toned, weathered from sun exposure, and his eyes were a deep brown. His clothing stood out: ancient-style linen garb, clearly outdated even by Iratus's standards.

Rimush: "Ah, friends! I hope my speaking of your language is well enough?"

Iratus: "It will do, my good sir."

Rimush: "Very nice. We have prepared a hotel room for you. Probably not the best around, but it is all we have—an abandoned city doesn't offer the finest accommodations."

Iratus: "It will be fine. We do not need exotic luxuries to feel welcomed."

Rimush: "Excellent, excellent. We were all excited to hear how soon you could arrive, but I think we may have overestimated how quickly we could get everything ready. There is limited plumbing, but enough to get cleaned up. After that, we can do some touring if you'd like. Many people are eager to speak with you—and I'll need a moment to gather them."

Iratus: "Of course. And thank you for arranging all of this."

Rimush: "Yes, yes. Once I have everyone moving, I will return as your temporary bodyguard and guide."

Victoria: "Only one guard?"

Rimush: "This is a small community. We don't actually expect violence. Your visit was agreed upon by all factions involved."

The human began issuing orders to his people. Iratus waited patiently, glancing over at Deficio for any insight.

Iratus: "Well?"

Deficio: "You people should start learning more languages. Anyway, sounds like standard procedure. It really does seem like they have multiple leaders here. Getting them all to agree on anything must be a challenge."

Iratus: "Well… no pain so far. Let's see what happens next."

---

Chapter 1000

There wasn't much of a tour. The city was still a wreck, with only pockets of true civility and beauty. Any garden, park, or lived-in area was well-kept and carefully maintained, but they were scattered and sparse.

A small crowd followed Iratus's group as they moved through the streets. Eventually, a journalist of some sort approached once Rimush and Resolutio gave her a quick look-over. She was a nixman with long white hair, deep purple skin, and silver eyes.

Jenny: "Excuse me, I'm Jenny from Counseling News. Iratus, I believe?"

Iratus: "Yes, that's me."

Jenny: "If I could ask a few questions—Purple City knows very little about Lionhearth, and we'd love to learn more."

Iratus: "Ask away."

Jenny: "Will this visit mark a new chapter in relations between our two settlements?"

Iratus: "I can only hope so. The Nexus Prime is extremely dangerous, full of monsters and warlords. The more people working toward a common goal, a goal of mutual survival, the more lives we can save."

Jenny: "That's quite noble."

Iratus: "I'm surprised to meet even one person in Purple City who speaks our language. Are you just that dedicated, or is it a hobby?"

Jenny: "Dedication, dear ruler of Lionhearth."

Iratus was already smiling—he had worn one since stepping into public view—but it widened slightly at her answer. Jenny, for her part, had been smiling the entire time as well.

Jenny: "Now then, can the people expect any formal agreements to come from this visit?"

Iratus: "I don't know. I think this visit is more about recognizing that we're not alone—that there are other settlements and peoples out there. However, we already have trade flowing across our borders, so maybe there could be more."

Iratus noticed another nixman, a male, translating for the small crowd that had gathered.

Jenny: "What traditions or cultural practices from your settlement would you like to share with us? And what values do you hope our people can learn from one another?"

Iratus: "I don't know enough about your culture to speak clearly on what to share or learn. If I had to name something, it would be our hardy spirit, our self-reliance balanced with communal understanding, especially within the family. But most of all, I'd want to share how we see love."

He pulled Victoria closer to him, wrapping a hand around her waist.

Iratus: "That a man and a woman are not two separate people, but only together can there be a complete person."

A deeply held belief from his homeworld—and one shared by many of the other bloodforged folk as well. It was a difficult idea to explain when his culture was the one that accepted multiple wives, but somethings were better left unsaid.

There were a few more questions, but soon Rimush and Resolutio, working in tandem, politely excused Iratus, citing schedule constraints. This signaled the group's movement toward a modest but authoritative building, one that stood out thanks to its maintenance and cleanliness.

Iratus suspected this was where he would meet the faction leaders of Purple City.

Episode 100 of my series. Black Hole, is a survival, low-fantasy, sci-fi story and I'd rate it as pg-13 for violence, some suggestive themes, and some nudity.

Imagine writing 100 episode, 1000 chapters, for a test series.
