Black Hole: The Book of Iratus, Episode 99
Chapter 981
Three days later, day 59, Iratus would talk to some of the new members at Last Mistake. One of the people Iratus had done well talking to was Disputatio Sapphire Halberd, a male rabbitfolk with tawny tan fur with salt-and-pepper flecks along his back and cheeks and his hair was dusty brown with streaks of white at the temples. His eyes were green and despite his age, he was shorter than Iratus. His clothing was a layered linen shirt, duster coat, utility belt with pouches for various items.
Disputatio: "I figured everyone else was just passing through, but I talked with 'em—convinced them this place wasn't so bad."
He tipped his worn wide-brimmed felt hat, which had a faded red feather tucked into the band, and gave his hand-carved walking stick a spin.
Disputatio: "I honestly don't know much about the others, but any place we can bunk for a time, I say be grateful."
The rabbit accidentally unsheathed the hidden blade within his cane, then quickly clasped it and played it off. Iratus was aware of a few things about the rabbit. He had a satchel with a harmonica, a journal, maps, and bundles of dried herbs.
Iratus: "You and the others could settle in Lionhearth, if you wanted."
Disputatio: "Them? They're staying in this beat-up Last Mistake for the quiet, I think."
The rabbit checked his old picket watch.
Disputatio: "Oh, it's that time again. Excuse me Lord of Lionhearth, I have promises to keep."
Iratus: "Before you go—where's your lever-action rifle? You out of bullets?"
Disputatio tilted his head.
Disputatio: "Huh? I'm not lugging Whistleback everywhere—especially not in here. And yeah, I've still got ammo."
Iratus: "You... named your weapon?"
Disputatio: "Doesn't everyone?"
Iratus left Last Mistake to return home. His thoughts lingered on the older rabbit, who had somehow survived twelve years in the Nexus Prime. Even with all that time, he was still just a traveler—one who lacked a deep understanding of the place. He called it the Crossroads before he found Iratus's group, he didn't know most of the monsters, but he's the only other person Iratus knows who is aware of the ebony and one that seemed like a stalker that was personalized for him. Then there was the other travelers who came around the same time as him. Last Mistake was growing now too, not just Lionhearth.

Chapter 982
Five days later, Iratus overheard a conversation between Fraus and Odorem in the communal kitchen.
Odorem: "So, how about that thing we talked about?"
Fraus: "Listen, Odorem, I'm sorry for avoiding you the past few days, but before the Nexus Prime—back in my old life—I was about to get married and become a mother to House Greenstone."
Odorem: "Oh... I think I see what's going on."
Fraus: "I've said that I married into their house, but I kept my Brassmoon name. When we die, we lose our most recent memories, and I honestly don't know if the marriage even happened before I ended up here."
Odorem stayed silent, listening closely.
Fraus: "And then there's the fact that, if we were to get married here, I'd feel like I was abandoning the person I wanted to marry before. Everything's been... complicated for me, especially when we started talking about a future together."
Odorem: "If you need some time to think, or if we should just have a civil breakup..."
The feline flicked her tail and sighed.
Fraus: "The real problem is that I'm still young. I've always wanted children. But if I try to keep my Greenstone name, I'll end up spending the next eighty years alone and childless. I don't want that life."
Iratus felt awkward hovering nearby, so he stepped away to attend to his duties, catching just the last part of the conversation.
Fraus: "That's why it's taken me so long to decide—I want to become part of your family instead."
Over time, Iratus also heard that Odorem's brother and Arcus were starting to build a relationship as well. Thirty days later, the two idols held their weddings on the same day: the marriage of Inlecebra and Arcus, and the marriage of Odorem and Fraus.
It was a surprisingly lively event—perhaps because people had really started to settle in, and so many more had arrived. But what stood out most to Iratus was the realization that this celebration would inspire others to start thinking about their own futures. And in the days that followed, more people began to explore dating.
More cabins were built, and more strangers passed through—mostly visitors and traders. But like Last Mistake, and like his own Lionhearth, Iratus knew more people would come to settle here, in the only real semblance of civilization on whatever planet they now called home in the Nexus Prime.

Chapter 983
Otiosus and Bai Xue had waited a long time. On Day 105, they finally held their wedding, even though Bai Xue still hadn't quite mastered the local language. It made for some humorous moments, but the two made a great team whenever they worked together.
On Day 118, Victoria gave birth to two more children: Constantia Lionheart and Justus Lionheart—a mostly silent baby and a mostly loud one, respectively. Iratus realized he would soon have to expand his tower; in a few years, it wouldn't be able to hold so many family members.
Over the next hundred days, more people discovered Iratus's tower—some became part of Lionheart, while others settled in the mostly empty town of Last Mistake. A full forge was established in Last Mistake, now busy smelting and crafting: bronze from the tin and copper mined from the artificial mountain, and steel by melting down abandoned vehicles and metal scraps from old towns and cities.
New buildings began rising in Lionhearth, and the local militia grew steadily stronger. Their training paid off when a new monster infestation appeared—metalheads, as they were called. In response, Disputatio, one of the new rabbitfolk from Last Mistake, devised a stunning plan: he lured the monsters into a rocky crevasse and used the high ground to safely skewer them from above.
By Day 335, another Blackest Day occurred, though this time with minimal damage. Some locations shifted or changed, but the settlement endured. New families formed: Certamen of the Lost Quickness and Ardens Ignifera became the founders of a new household—Lost Fire. Sutura Vigilia Nocturna became the second wife of Confodere Oculi Acuti, and Astrid Kuivuus became the second wife of Otiosus after learning that Bai Xue's culture embraced plural marriage, usually reserved for the powerful or wealthy.
One of the new arrivals, a hyenafolk named Laedere Malondo, managed to swoon Praevalidum. The ant girl was completely smitten by his boldness—and his real hyena cackle.
Praevalidum: "In the realm of danger, that man is the first to dive into it. That's what the humans call hot."
Another newcomer, Collaboratio Diamond Rennick, a rabbitfolk, won Vesper's heart with his art and poetry.
Four years passed. Then five. Then six. At six years and twenty-one days, Iratus stood looking over Lionhearth. His tower could no longer hold his growing family, and he had begun building an outer housing section around the first floor—expanding the tower outward.
A few more wanderers arrived and were welcomed into Lionhearth. Even Last Mistake gained new members. As he stepped outside, Iratus greeted another simple day in the Nexus Prime.

Chapter 984
Iratus took an hour to join in the military training led by Otiosus—and even just that one hour was intense.
Iratus: "How has everyone else fared so far?"
The other mouse man handed him a water canteen before answering.
Otiosus: "When people show up, they do well. Everyone's getting really good at being a soldier—marching, fighting, staying in formation—the works. The only ones lagging behind are the females, but that's mostly because the girls around here won't stop getting pregnant." He finished with a bit of a laugh.
Iratus: "Speaking of which, how have your wives been?"
Otiosus: "Astrid was kind enough to try the whole second-wife thing, and it seems she's finally settling in. Better yet, my two loves are probably in the running for top armed combatants. Astrid was just a merchant, but her species has this freakishly natural talent for combat. It's almost unnerving. But hey, at least now we know that those born from blood and those born from clay can intermix."
Iratus: "I wonder if Eirik will inherit any mousefolk traits."
Otiosus shrugged.
Otiosus: "I hope so. It'd be nice to see something of myself passed down."
Iratus and Otiosus chatted a bit more before Iratus went to check in with the Malondo family.
Iratus: "How has the mining been?"
Praevalidum: "Like in my homeland, I've molded the tunnels perfectly—or at least, based on what I remember. Tunneling wasn't my specialty, but I believe I made the correct calculations and used the right number of support beams."
From inside the cabin, a short hyena man—short for bloodforge species, anyway—was working on his bike. His fur was a sandy beige with dark brown spots and a stripe running down his spine, while his hair was white.
Laedere: "I'm still waiting on that whole conflict with Purple City. I'm gonna invent drive-by shooting for you guys. Hell yeah!" He looked over with a glint in his orange-gold eyes.
Iratus: "I'm always glad to see your enthusiasm, Laedere."
After checking in with the mining chief and her husband, Iratus headed over to the Diamond Rennick family.

Chapter 985
Vesper was cradling her baby when Iratus found her in her own little garden plot.
Iratus: "I guess everyone's got their own little garden area now."
Vesper: "Maybe... This farming stuff is so hard. Everything keeps going wrong."
Iratus: "Yeah, my Ignis says the same thing with our garden. But hey, how's the pig collecting going?"
Vesper: "That's a nope. We need domesticated pigs, not wild boars. I mean, all these wild animals—bison, deer, and whatnot—they work, but I think we need to expand our area of control if we want proper animal farms to function. That includes the boars."
Iratus: "Does that mean I need to build a third wall?"
Vesper: "I think we either need to cut down a lot more trees or find a better ranching spot."
Iratus: "I see. I'll get someone on that. Say hello to Collaboratio for me."
Vesper: "Will do, Iratus."
Next up were Diffido, Echo, and Sagitta, just returning from a scouting expedition.
Iratus: "Still all clear?"
Echo: "That's right. Not a single monster. That Blackest Day twenty days ago didn't drop a single new creature—not even gray masks have shown up."
Iratus: "Well, maybe we need to expand our search?"
Sagitta: "We did a full rotation around the tower. Unless the farm folks aren't keeping proper tabs on their area, I'd say we've got a solid grasp of what's out there and what isn't."
Iratus: "Got it. Makes sense."
Before the scouts left, Iratus grabbed the young mouseman by the arm.
Iratus: "How's work been, Diffido?"
Diffido: "Honestly? I thought it would be more glamorous. But I've spent fifteen straight days on the move. Jobs are the worst."
Iratus laughed.

Chapter 986
Iratus spent more time going over events and responsibilities with the others. He discussed the border with Resolutio, Parabula, and Salvos. He talked about the beach and how to make something of it with the Winter Winds family. Confodere, Liora, and Sutura gave their own reports on lootable locations, while the Hot Waves brothers and their wives worked on setting up expeditions into nearby towns and cities—gathering supplies and recruiting more manpower. Certamen and his wife Ardens focused on the burned-down city across the river and took the initiative to form farming efforts for the rice fields there.
Iratus also visited Last Mistake, which was becoming a haven for those who didn't want the crowded life of the main settlement and preferred the near-empty town. There, he looked over Malignitas's wares.
Iratus: "You've really expanded your crafting abilities."
Malignitas: "Meh. I think it's just experience. Or maybe it's the new moldings I've made to produce better metal items."
Later, Iratus took a trip out to the farmlands beyond the tower—to Commercium and Abrasione's farm. They had significantly improved the land, now including many more animals and hiring Lionhearth residents to keep up with rising demand.
When all his dealings were finished, Iratus returned home, where many of his children were now old enough to run around and cause trouble. Each of his kids resembled their respective mothers—a fact Iratus occasionally lamented, as he knew he wouldn't be able to have mousefolk children. But what mattered most to him was that his bloodline would continue on.
Once the children were put to bed, Iratus joined his four wives to discuss the day, their plans, and the future.
Victoria: "We need to focus on firearms, even if we have to make them ourselves. Purple City will come for us eventually, and I want to ensure we have military superiority."
Aestus: "I think if we just look big and scary, they won't come. We should build larger walls and towers. Peace through strength."
Ignis Yang: "Perhaps a fragment of industrial prowess—cannons, maybe even ships?"
Resonantia: "Leave military matters to me. We need to set the battlefield ourselves. Win the war before it begins."
Iratus: "Hey, if you girls want to manage all that, have at it. Once Purple City finally shows up, any prep work you've done will be a huge boon to my mental state."
---
Chapter 987
The next day, Iratus was about to fall into his usual routine of checking in and figuring out what had been going on, when a new person was spotted at the gate.
It was a human male with short black hair, brown skin, and gray eyes. His equipment was clearly suited for wilderness survival: a worn canvas rucksack with multiple internal compartments, a wool-lined jacket with reinforced elbows and a stitched-on rank patch, lightweight climbing gear, and various tools and items. He also smelled faintly of pine and ash fire, and wore a brass chain around his neck.
Human: "Are you in charge, buddy?"
Iratus: "Yes, how can I help you?"
From the side, Otiosus joined the conversation.
Otiosus: "Yup, Iratus—King of Lionhearth."
Iratus: "Dang it, man."
Iratus still didn't like being called a king, and the human raised an eyebrow.
Human: "King, huh?"
Iratus: "I have no idea why people keep calling me that. I just own the tower, and people decided to live here too. What can I say?"
Human: "Right, well, my name is Elias Corbin."
He looked around the growing settlement, taking it all in.
Elias: "I'm from Purple City."
Otiosus: "Wow, three hundred miles, almost four hundred? All alone?"
Elias: "I'm used to it, and the Nexus Prime barely makes it more challenging."
Iratus: "Well, I'm glad to hear that. This place has given us plenty of dangers to deal with out there."
The human nodded.
Elias: "Thank you. I'm here to open a dialogue—see if we can find ways to trade between our two settlements."
Some of the onlookers from Lionhearth visibly tensed at the mention of Purple City, but the two mousefolk remained perfectly disciplined.
Iratus: "I see."
There was a pause, so the human continued.
Elias: "I don't know if you've come across any modern cities in your time here, but we live in one—and we have a lot of goods that could be of value to your community."
He glanced up, noticing the lights strung around Lionhearth.
Elias: "We even have electronics—things like medical equipment or entertainment devices."
Otiosus: "I'd love to find out what all the fuss is about those video games everyone keeps talking about."
Iratus, however, kept his eyes on Elias.
Iratus: "Hm. After one of my companions was killed, you do realize Lionhearth and Purple City aren't exactly on friendly terms?"
Elias: "Right... but you can't let that keep your settlement from growing. Politics is bigger than just one grudge."
Iratus: "I'm well aware. But random acts of murder don't make Purple City a trustworthy trading partner."
---
Chapter 988
Elias: "The people of Purple City and its leadership are two separate factions. Many of us don't agree with what happened when your group came to meet us. I'm here on behalf of the people of Purple City. Just like you, we're working hard to build a place where people can live safely. I've read tales from old journals about the Nexus Prime—apparently, settlements like ours are incredibly rare."
Iratus paused, considering that. Journals—did he mean from the Summoners? He wasn't sure, but that wasn't the point right now.
Elias: "We can have peace. Our two settlements could thrive through trade."
Otiosus: "If it's alright with you, Iratus, let's give this man a seat at the kitchen. That's where we hold our meetings anyway."
Iratus: "Sure. Come on in, Mr. Corbin."
They brought Elias into the Lionhearth communal kitchen, where he presented Purple City's offers. The room quickly filled with murmurs of interest.
Vesper: "Seeds? We need seeds."
Ignis: "Real medical supplies?"
Iratus raised a hand to quiet the voices before speaking.
Iratus: "But what do you need from us, then?"
Elias: "I'm not even sure what you have. We need metals, blacksmithing, uh… food and stuff."
Iratus: "I'm not sure most food could survive the journey. It's over thirty days on foot to Purple City."
Elias: "You've got carts, and the farm up the road has a bunch of animals. Not all food spoils in a day if you handle it right."
Iratus: "Yeah, we could rig up an improvised fridge too."
People continued chiming in as ideas bounced around the kitchen.
Victoria: "We could hook the old generator to a real fridge if we needed to."
Salvos: "That still takes fuel—and we only get that from Blackest Day drops."
Iratus: "Regardless, I still don't fully trust Purple City, so I don't think we should just lay all our cards on the table."
Elias: "In the end, if you don't want to trade, then it can't be helped."
Iratus let out a slow sigh.
Iratus: "How about this: you write a list of what you need, and we'll see what we can offer. We've got plenty of tools and equipment we could spare. We'll try a small-scale run before we commit to anything long-term."
Iratus asked Fraus to show Elias around and escort him to Last Mistake, with a few others, to give him a better sense of what Lionhearth had to offer.
Once Elias was ready to move on, Iratus pulled Sagitta aside.
Iratus: "Our vehicle may be covered up, but can you move it to our secondary campsite before we return?"
Sagitta: "Ah, I see. What about the Humvee at Last Mistake?"
Iratus: "I sent Resonantia and Echo ahead to give them a heads-up."
Sagitta: "Got it. But I do have a question—if this guy reports back that we've got working vehicles and weapons, wouldn't that show how strong we are? Might help avoid a war?"
Iratus: "There was a saying the military had on my planet: When you are weak, appear strong. When you are strong, appear weak. I don't know how Earth cultures work, but where I come from, strength invites challenge. Humility is a virtue. That's why we'll do what we can to be friendly."
Sagitta: "Alright. Your call, sir."

Chapter 989
It wasn't possible to hide the great forge from the human. Elias immediately recognized that it was more than just a simple blacksmith's pit—clearly a proper forge of advanced craftsmanship. Still, that made negotiations with him a little easier.
Elias: "I'm going to need more paper. If we'd known you had a forge, we would've written out everything ahead of time."
Malignitas: "Why don't you people have one?"
The one-eyed cat wasn't exactly known for being sociable, but his tone was even more curt than usual.
Elias: "We don't really have anyone with that kind of skill set. Honestly, we wouldn't even know where to start when it comes to building smelters or furnaces. As for materials—we've got broken-down cars all over the place, but no one's sure if they're even usable."
Malignitas: "That makes sense if you're not properly equipped. I've had to train a few people myself just to handle mixed metals. You need to know what you're working with—or you'll end up with garbage. I've also got some protective gear for dealing with materials that release toxic fumes when melted. Stuff like paint, rubber, chrome plating—you name it. But yeah, unless you've got a forge hot enough to actually melt the metal, don't even bother trying. Without the right heat, you can't separate alloys or purify anything."
After taking note of Lionhearth's capabilities, Elias began placing orders and discussing potential trades with Malignitas.
Malignitas: "Wait—can't you get that stuff from your city?"
Elias: "Purple City is old. By the time we took control, it had already been stripped bare. And then there's the farming issue. We just can't find proper agricultural tools. Sure, there are some old rural farms and houses scattered around, but most of it's ancient. We haven't found anything that really helps with our food production problems."
Later, back at Lionhearth, further discussions continued regarding the trade agreements. But before final decisions were made, someone else spoke up.
Bellum: "You want a lot of food—did you ever talk to the farm folk up the road?"
Elias: "The rabbit guy—Commercium, right? He told me flat-out to talk to the people at Lionhearth. He seemed pretty adamant about working only for your settlement."
Iratus couldn't help but imagine the usually lazy Commercium turning around with a thumbs-up of loyalty. His opinion of the rabbit had just improved.
---
Chapter 990
Iratus: "There's one more matter I'd like to ask about before you head back."
He had gathered various supplies and gear for the traveler as part of their tentative agreement.
Elias: "Oh? And what would that be?"
Iratus: "There were some travelers from the Old Purple City. Then your people showed up, and it sounded like everyone before you was killed. What exactly happened up there?"
There was a brief silence before Elias answered.
Elias: "Some people didn't like how things were being run. Actually, it's still bad—Purple City is split into two factions now. We call them the Crowns and the Councilors. Anyway, right… about the former inhabitants. I don't know what else to say. A war happened. They lost. There just weren't enough people who supported them, and… yeah, it was a slaughter. Look, I don't really like talking about all that."
Iratus studied the man. To him, Elias seemed… guilty. Not just reflective—guilty.
Elias: "And besides the two tribes I mentioned, like I said earlier, the people themselves still have a lot of say about how badly the leaders have done some things."
Iratus: "I see. Would you say the same about your hunting patrols? I've had people report that some of your people have killed merchants—people who weren't doing anything wrong."
Elias: "Nexus Prime is dangerous. Monsters, warlords, crazy stuff roaming around. You give scared people weapons, and they overreact at the slightest threat. I do condemn any murders my people might've committed—and most folks in Purple City would say the same. Things got heated. Tensions got so high, the city split in two. I'm just here to get things we can't make or find on our own."
Iratus listened. He accepted most of what Elias said—for the sake of peace—but neither he nor many others in Lionhearth completely trusted Purple City. Once the human left, people had opinions.
Studium: "Weren't we told Purple City would be hostile to us or something? Maybe that AI thing you ran into was wrong?"
Others were more directly opposed.
Echo: "Everyone I cared about in Purple City is dead. I don't care what they offer—we shouldn't be trading with them."
Resolutio: "I agree. Sure, trade can bring peace, but only if both sides are reasonable. Their hatred and greed will bring them to our gates one day—and any resources we send them now will just fuel the war machine they'll use against us."
But not everyone felt the same.
Aestus: "Maybe we can have peace. You heard how divided they are—maybe we can work with the good people over there."
Before the end of the day, Disputatio Sapphire Halberd arrived from Last Mistake with something important to discuss.
Iratus: "Disputatio? What can I help you with?"
Disputatio: "I've been asking around. I heard it takes around fifteen days to get to the border—just to make the trade trip?"
Iratus nodded.
Disputatio: "Well… what if I told you I used to work in a place that had a solution to all that walking?"
Iratus: "Hm? Please explain."
Disputatio: "You've got two vehicles, limited fuel, and no steady way of replenishing it—unless a Darkest Day changes the area. But I'm telling you… I know where oil is still being extracted."
