I've made a few posts on twitter but I felt like this is at a decent enough level to share here too. I've been slooowly working on a new character maker. Since Flash died I kinda never did more interactive stuff, but I've been playing around with Godot a bit. It felt like a nice little transition to an engine that lets me do 2D stuff but actually has a lot more built into it than Flash did for these things.
It is far from done, and I don't think I want to release anything until I'm at least happy with a base version. There are still bugs and QoL stuff I wanna add, and it's missing a ton of options. I pretty much have only added tails and ears so far, since I have focused all my energy on the editor itself until now. Also, there is no concrete plan right now for game elements, just ideas I wanna play around with. I'm taking this a step at a time.
BUT I'm happy that I got most of the major features implemented for the editor portion, which give you much more control than the old one. These are the main new things:
- I'm using a paper doll system, which gives me individual control over each part, so I can attach whatever I want to the body and then animate it however I want later (right now there is only a very early and crappy walking animation).
- Every part can be moved, resized, rotated and colored independently, which gives a lot more freedom to adjust any of the parts I end up making for it. I have also made it so you can do this with either sliders or using the mouse directly on the preview screen.
- On top of that, any part can have up to 3 textures, letting you make patterns that can also be moved, resized, rotated and colored independently.
- Characters can be saved and loaded locally, or converted into a string of text to be shared and imported. (I tried to make these fit within even a tweet for even easier sharing, but even reducing it as much as possible and compressing it still makes the text be around 300-500 letters long.)
