During his time adventuring in Icewind Dale, Jokra found that he was able to somehow project part of his spirit outside of his body, in the form of what he eventually learned was called an "astral self". It was greatly helpful while on his adventure, and now that he's gotten back home, he's been working on some of its non-combat abilities. Having already learned to talk through it - perfectly clearly, regardless of where he is - he's now practicing seeing through it.
It's slow going, but through focusing on his astral self's eyes with his own closed, over time he's gone from not seeing anything at all to having extremely blurry vision. It's actually slightly better than his own eyesight underwater, so he moved his practice there. Sitting on the edge of a reef with his real eyes closed and his breath held, he tries his best to look around, unable to make out much more than basic shapes just yet as he has his astral self pick up a loose object of some sort. Now, is that a broken bit of coral, or a brightly-colored rock...
This is one of the D&D characters I've played, Jokra Jolas, a kobold who's an astral self monk. And yes, he's a Jojo reference, because my first impression of astral self monks was that they're essentially stand users.
