I adapted some elements and techniques I picked up from Procreate Tutorials and adapted them for my own purposes. Also I’m using a new shading technique for Tamias. I call it Subtractive shading. I start by using a clipping mask layer over the character. In my old method, I would use this layer to add shading to the character and keep adding until I was satisfied. That’s something I have always done. However this time around instead of adding shading, I would fill the clipping mask layer with the shade color, either a very dark cool blue or black depending on the context and scenarios I’m working with. Then I go back through an d start chipping away at that shadow in areas where the light strikes the character. This is forcing me to think about where and how light strikes the character. Shadows are ma natural state. Light is an affect on the character. That’s the mindset of this new technique. After the subtractive shading is done, I’ll throw down another layer to add core shadows and highlights. The result is a more three dimensional looking character. I love how. Tamias looks using this new technique. Also I love how his forest background turned out using the new techniques I picked up.
