Vera has decided to stay up late to teach Miles some manners about talking to Lapis.
Despite her charismatic personality and high level of energy, Lapis was never a very popular kid at school. Most of her classmates thought she was weird and a bit too much to deal with sometimes, so Lapis would often find herself alone after school or on weekends instead of hanging out with friends. Lapis wouldn't really make a real friend until some new kid moved into town and introduced himself at school.
Miles is a pretty laid-back kid when it comes to most situations. He has a very neutral energy that he carries around with him from day to day that perfectly balances Lapis' intense jumps between positive and negative reactions to things. The two get along fairly well, and Miles isn't really put off by any of Lapis' weird ideas or antics she usually gets into. Miles was the first real friend Lapis has ever had and, because of this, Lapis wound up developing a heavy and unsubtle crush on Miles.
Miles never really shared Lapis' feelings and only considered her a good friend to hang out with, but Lapis was never one to back down from anything she cared about. Since becoming friends, Lapis has consistently been trying her hardest to spend as much time with Miles as she possibly can in hopes that he will one day start to look at her like she looks at him. Of course, Lapis' attempts and feelings have gone completely unnoticed by Miles, but just about everyone else around theses two is fully aware of what's going on... including Vera.
Vera has been distrustful of Miles since the moment she realized Lapis has a crush on him. Being so protective of Lapis, Vera fears that there will be a boy that will one day break Lapis' fragile heart. To prevent this from happening, Vera has taken it upon herself to scare off any boy that gets too close to Lapis, and to ensure that they never reach a position that could possibly harm Lapis in any way. Despite her best efforts, Vera has been unable to scare away Miles, but that won't stop her from trying.
