THIS IS AN EDIT OF AN EXISTING IMAGE BY NINTENDO CO LTD
Pokemon X/Y - Fennekin (フォッコ Fokko)
Original image: Dropbox (official art by Nintendo)

This is an edit of official artwork by Nintendo/GameFREAK staff.

Now that I've said five times it's an edit and given credit, I hope I don't have to say it again!

Nintendo recently announced rather casually that they were making new Pokémon games, Pokemon X and Pokemon Y. Chances are they'll go ahead and release a third version, Z, to complete the set because it's... XYZ? You know, 3D space?

Well I was very disappointed in the lineup they showed. In particular, Fennekin, the most boring fox ever.

Twenty minutes later I'd colored it up all pretty to look more interesting. Why didn't they take the extra time to color the damn fox? It literally looks like they didn't finish drawing it.

Observations:

Fennekin is a bright yellow color typical of kitsune, because you know we didn't have a kitsune pokemon back in Generation 1 or anything. The stereotypical kitsune may be pure gold, but I usually see them with black-and-white highlights on their limbs and tail.

The only color on Fennekin other than that pale yellow was the rosy-red on its ear fluffs and the black on the tip of its nose. The rosy-red was also the tip of the tail before I changed it a bit.

List of things I changed:

The first rule of designing a fox is to ALWAYS color the ears, legs, and tail, preferably with the same colors. This is because a. most foxes are colored that way and b. it always looks better. Nintendo's concept artist did the tail, but he didn't do the ears or the legs because he must have fallen asleep at the desk. So I did the ears and the legs.

The typical Japanese kitsune has two colors for its highlights, so I used two colors. Rather than just make it the traditional black and white (boring), I threw in some orange which was meant to be the red from the ears but because I used quick-tricks to do this quickly it was only approximate and turned out a bit more orange. DAM!!!

I put markings on the face, including a line down the nose to enhance the facial shape. It's its face. If it's a living thing with a face that has identifiable eyes than the face should be the most interesting part, I mean IT'S THE DAMN FACE!

The tip of the tail has been changed to black and orange to match the legs and ears.

It was my least-hated out of the revealed designs but it was absurdly effortless and boring. It's all one color from head to toe. It's literally just a generic 20-second fox.

Go ahead, I don't own the character or anything.

Most people make up their own whacko color schemes for their Pokémon anyway.

I think its supposed to be a Fenic fox pokemon rather than a kitsune pokemon this time as X&Y seems to be set in the pokemon equivalent of France rather than a region of japan. Other than that I wouldn't be surprised if your color scheme shows up on its eventual evolutions.

Well, the English name is Fennekin (Fennec-in) so there's something to that, but its coloring definitely gives kitsune vibes.
