In the show, Twi did it because she created a time loop where her future self met her past self and her past self needed to find out what the deal was so she did some heavy research at Canterlot and found a spell to travel back in time (about a day) and had a bunch of high-jinks. She realized she had over reacted and time travel was not something to mess around with so they never used it again.
So unless the plot calls for it, they probably won't use it.
