Black Hole: The Book of Iratus, Episode 78

Chapter 771

In the dining room of the farmhouse was Resolutio, the black-furred goat woman sat at a wooden table. Her camo jeans were dusty, and a black tank top hugged her muscular frame. Her usual armor was absent, replaced by a backpack slung carelessly over a chair, a brand-new maul leaning against the wall, and a pistol strapped to her hip. She looked like she’d been through a war.

Resolutio’s lips curled into a half-smile, but there was something sharp in her eyes, like sarcasm wrapped around exhaustion.

Resolutio: "Yup, it's the super nomads here to say hello." Her voice was tinged with a bombastic humor that didn’t quite land.

Iratus: "Are you okay?"

The goat woman tilted her head back, exhaling sharply.

Resolutio: "Commercium and Abrasione have been telling me about your exploits. One of them intrigues me greatly—Purple City."

Iratus shifted his weight, crossing his arms. His expression changed to concern, and his ears twitched slightly.

Iratus: "Did you run into them?"

The fatigue etched across Resolutio’s face deepened.

Resolutio: "I just... One day, our RV group grew back, not only to our original number but even beyond the capacity of the RV. The day I lost my sister and almost everyone else in my group almost shattered my confidence, but—"

She paused, rubbing the back of her neck.

Resolutio: "But when I found so many wandering souls who wanted to travel with us, I felt like I accomplished her wishes."

She threw her hands up in a sudden burst of exasperation.

Resolutio: "Then, Purple City."

Her tone darkened, her gaze drifting to a far corner of the room, as though the memory played out like a cruel film reel.

Resolutio: "At first, I thought I was lucky I knew their language. Even the old human lady with us couldn’t speak it—because Earth has, like, a million different languages, apparently. They promised fairness and honorable dealings. But once we were inside, they tried to steal everything we had."

She sighed heavily, the kind of sigh that carried weeks of frustration and unspoken grief. For a moment, silence filled the room, broken only by the faint creak of wood under Iratus’s shifting weight.

When she spoke again, it was with renewed energy, her voice rising as if to fight the weariness clawing at her.

Resolutio: "It took a lot of sacrifices to get out of there, but that’s not the worst part. Oh no, not by a long shot."

She leaned forward, resting her elbows on the table.

Resolutio: "We drove for days. Days! Then, one afternoon, we were surprised—ambushed, really—by cars pouring in and shooting up the abandoned motel we’d holed up in. I begged them to just take the RV and leave us be, but their captain? Oh, he had the gall to laugh in my face and say they were there to kill us."

Iratus’s ears flattened as he listened.

Resolutio: "Those clay-made human things chased us relentlessly. Fifteen days, Iratus. Fifteen days of driving, just to finish us off. Who in the nine hells does that?"

Her voice cracked at the edges, and for a moment, she just sat there, shaking her head. The weight of the words hung in the room like a leaden fog.

Chapter 772

Abrasione, the hyena woman and Commercium’s wife, leaned against the back of a worn armchair, arms crossed, her spotted fur bristling slightly. She shook her head, her expression a mix of disbelief and resignation.

Abrasione: "Every interaction with the people of Purple City only reveals more and more that Yaqar might be right."

Resolutio's floppy ears twitching with curiosity.

Resolutio: "Who is that?"

Iratus was standing by the window at this point, the sunlight catching the edges of his blonde fur. He glanced at Resolutio, his tone casual but tinged with annoyance.

Iratus: "An annoying, manipulative, super smart Programed Intelligence."

Before he could elaborate, Resolutio interjected.

Resolutio: "Like an AI?"

Iratus: "By some definitions, yes. But Yaqar lacked the personhood a true AI could exhibit. It's more... functional than sentient."

He paused, his tone growing more serious.

Iratus: "Yaqar predicted a war with Purple City in ten years, maybe more. We're all trying to prepare for it."

Resolutio’s brow furrowed as she processed the information, her eyes widening after a moment.

Resolutio: "You’re going to war?"

Commercium glanced away, but Iratus remained steady, his gaze fixed on Resolutio.

Iratus: "I’ll do everything I can to avoid it. But I think it’s inevitable."

Resolutio looked away. The tension in her shoulders eased slightly, only to return as she began to speak, her tone shifting to something more reflective.

Resolutio: "There once was a mighty empire, the Land of Rivers. In that empire, there was a common soldier—a black-furred goat like myself. She was wrongfully imprisoned. That soldier broke Slave Street, led a revolt, and fled to the forests of the south. The freed slaves followed her, placing their unwavering trust in their liberator."

Her voice grew quieter.

Resolutio: "The faith of the former slaves moved her to tears. She turned back to lead them—a mismatched army of the downtrodden—straight into the heart of the empire. Her strategy was bold: lure the empire's forces into a trap, cross the great river, and strike the capital while the empire’s army was stranded on the far bank."

Resolutio’s hands gestured as she spoke.

Resolutio: "She hired pirates to aid her, paying them top coin to show up at the critical moment. But when the battle began, the pirates never came."

She stood up.

Resolutio: "Her name was Resolutio. She was found atop a mountain of enemy corpses, her cheeks streaked with tears. She was the last one standing, and yet, she still died in the end."

Her voice cracked slightly, but she didn’t pause.

Resolutio: "We name our children after tales or stories to remind us of our history, our tragedies. My name is to honor her—a tale of unfinished destiny. I lost my group, and I lost my sister. Twice, I’ve faced utter ruin. And now I can foresee my death in this war. It’s my destiny!"

Resolutio dropped to one knee, bowing her head low.

Resolutio: "Let me join you. Become my liege."

The room fell silent for a moment.

Arcus: "She’s worse than Ignis! Hello, Ignis, how’s your day? Oh, let me tell you the entire history of my people. A simple I’m fine would’ve worked."

Iratus chuckled and grasped the bridge of his nose.

Iratus: "Why does everyone keep calling me a King?" I swear, I’ve got the worst luck."

---

Chapter 773

The goat woman stood back up.

Resolutio: "Within the wrath of the felines, I place my trust in you. Also, sorry for leaving you guys to die back when we first met."

Iratus: "Yeah, its fine; don't worry about it."

The fox girl's tail twitched slightly.

Arcus: "You know what? Everyone keeps calling you a cat, and I've never asked why."

The mouse boy smiled, and then he gestured to his slit-pupiled eyes.

Iratus: "I may look like a mouse, but technically I am actually a cat, for my people went extinct a long time ago."

Fraus turning to Arcus: "I guess I never found a mouse kinsman to explain to you what mousefolk are."

Resolutio: "Ethnic replacement is a common tactic many people-species employ. I never asked any mouse-cat about their history, but how do you feel about what happened to your ancestors?"

Iratus shrugged, his expression neutral.

Iratus: "Uh, I don't. Two thousand years of separation does that. I am a cat, and that's that."

The room fell silent for a second before Commercium raised his hand.

Commercium: "Two thousand years and some people back in my world are still complaining about stolen land."

Abrasione, who had been pacing near a doorway, paused. The muffled cries of her babies echoed faintly from the hallway, tugging at her attention. She turned slightly, her spotted tail swishing behind her.

Abrasione: "In my time, ancestral wrongs were watered down to politics and ruined any movement to right past wrongs," she said over her shoulder before leaving the room.

The feline shrugged as she spoke next.

Fraus: "A black mark on history for sure, but no one back in our world; let's let the past control them."

Arcus’s ears perked up, her foxtail swishing sharply as she spun to face Fraus.

Arcus: "I wish my people could say the same. A few hundred years ago, my nation ended their feud with the wolves. Centuries of blood and death, all amounting to nothing. However, in my time, it feels like most people are tickled that the war ended because of flirting."

Chapter 774

Iratus turned back to Resolutio.

Iratus: "I assume you are the last survivor of your group."

Resolutio chuckled.

Resolutio chuckling: "Did you not hear my story?"

Iratus: "Right. The person you’re named after was the last one to perish. Seems like fate has a cruel sense of humor. Well, should we talk about where you will live?"

Commercium: "I've already filled her in on all the hot spots around. I'm glad she has changed her mind and will be staying."

The goat woman nodded her head and then turned to Iratus.

Resolutio: "I'll live in your land; build my own house too if need be."

Iratus: "Something wrong with your RV?"

Resolutio: "It’s not really livable anymore. Honestly, it won’t be moving again. The engine gave out on the road nearby." She gestured vaguely toward the road.

Commercium's eyes lit up and he gave a smirk.

Commercium: "Then I guess it’s mine now." He finished the statement with a mischievous grin.

Resolutio rolled her eyes.

Resolutio: "Have at it. Consider it an apology for the last time."

Commercium: "I was only upset about you guys not coming back."

As the exchange tapered off, the room settled into a quieter rhythm. Iratus glanced at the others and saw the group begin to gather their things. Once on the road, a thought came to Iratus.

Iratus: "Resolutio?"

Resolutio: "Hm, yes?"

Iratus: "I hope this does not sound rude, but how did you and your sister die the first time?"

Arcus: "God, I don't think I'll ever get used to the idea that we all already died once."

The black-furred goat girl had a physical response to Iratus's question that made everyone take a glance at her.

Resolutio: "That is personal, so I refuse to answer."

Iratus: "That's fair."

---

Chapter 775

Back at the tower, Iratus introduced Resolutio to everyone, and the small community welcomed her and offered a temporary stay until she had her own home.

Iratus shared some information.

Iratus: "So Commercium Abrasione have had two more kids."

Ignis jokingly: "Proof that we are lacking in children and thus must redouble our efforts into building this family."

The shark girl, Resonantia examined Resolutio, her blue eyes looked up and down.

Resonantia: "It looks like you've seen a lot of recent battle."

Resolutio: "I had to fight my way out of Purple City and more."

Resonantia: "Did you at least diminish their forces some."

The goat woman gave a wide grin.

After a few minutes, Resolutio would turn and talk to her former nomads.

Resolutio: "Studium, Fuligo , glad to see you two safe."

The fox boy swished his tail in happiness.

Studium: "And I thought I'd never see you again. I can't wait to tell you all the adventures I've been on."

Fuligo: "This is going to be like old times, Resolutio, you'll see."

The fox boy pointed at his marriage collar.

Studium: "Fuligo and I have already married and I even have a second wife, Bellum."

The cheetah girl came over and bumped fists with the goat woman.

Bellum: "Glad to meet the legendary Resolutio. These two have told me a lot about you."

Resolutio: "Well I hope that I don't disappoint."

---

Chapter 776

Resolutio: "So, you said two wives?"

Studium: "Yeah. Something wrong?"

Resolutio tilted her head.

Resolutio: "My nation didn't really do the whole, multiple wives thing. Honestly, your whole world is similar like that too. Ah, but I guess it does not really matter."

Studium: "Of course. These two girls complete me and now I am a whole person."

She smiled.

Resolutio: "Glad our religions line up with that philosophy."

Soon enough, Resolutio was introduced to Iratus's toddlers in the tower. One of the babies reached for her horns and Resolutio laughed lightly.

Victoria was standing nearby with her arms crossed, nodded toward the scene.

Victoria: "As you can see, this is truly our home."

Aestus: "We can't uproot and move out."

Resolutio nodded, her tone contemplative.

Resolutio: "Oh no, I understand. Seeing the Cobalts and your babies, it appears that us Bloodforge souls can have cross-species children."

Iratus was leaning against the doorframe.

Iratus: "Venatio said that hybridization was a much longer process, and until then, children will be of the mother's species."

She glanced at Iratus, her tone curious.

Resolutio: "Speaking of which, where is the old fox lady?"

Iratus’s ears flattened slightly, and his expression darkened.

Iratus: "Ah, right. She was killed by some sort of lead man in Purple City."

Resolutio sighed, leaning back and folding her arms.

Resolutio: "Oh dang. She was always the inventive one."

Iratus’s expression lightened somewhat as he chuckled at the memory.

Iratus: "Oh yeah. Back when we met you, she didn't know much about smelting ores, but once we discovered a copper mountain, she became a blacksmithing expert overnight."

---

Chapter 777

Ten days passed before Iratus gathered supplies and a cart to venture into the forest again. This time, he returned with an assortment of cooking items and foods plundered from an abandoned town. Determined to make something special for his lovers, he enlisted their help to navigate the unfamiliar territory of baking.

Victoria sorted through the ingredients methodically, her precision a stark contrast to Aestus’s enthusiastic improvisation.

Aestus: "I think we should add these spices," Aestus suggested, holding up a small jar with a mischievous grin.

Resonantia: "I respectfully disagree, sister. These treats require only what is necessary and nothing more." She said it with a firm and calm tone.

Aestus: "If you never experiment then nothing new can ever be born."

Ignis chuckled.

Ignis: "Regrettably for you, this endeavor concerns confections, not the dawn of a culinary renaissance."

Once the treats were finished and the chocolate hardened, Iratus picked up a knife to cut them into pieces. Before he could make a single slice, Resonantia deftly took over, her movements quick and precise.

Iratus: "These are called Scotcharoos."

The family of five gathered around the counter, marveling at the glossy chocolate frosting swirled with butterscotch, layered over crispy rice bound together with peanut butter. The simple dessert was born from their combined effort, and they delighted in devouring it all in one day.

Later that night, Iratus invited his lovers for a night patrol, but no one offered to go.

Ignis: "My apologies, dearest, but even in the nascent phase of pregnancy, our vigor—though bolstered by our resilient youth—wanes noticeably. Perhaps another among us might be better suited for tonight's watch."

Iratus: "I suppose so. Well, have a good night then, my loves."

---

Chapter 778

The next day dawned with a golden light shinning over the settlement. Iratus stood outside his tower, rolling a map between his hands. He looked out over the bustling camp, where people were already busy with their morning routines: tending to crops, sharpening tools, and exchanging laughter as they passed one another.

Iratus: "We have fifteen days' worth of territory just to the border and I’d like to map it out a bit more. Anyone willing to travel with me?"

The conversation drifted as the group discussed logistics, but Iratus’s heart sank when he noticed Victoria and the others he cherished most were noticeably absent.

Later that morning, he found Victoria in the garden, crouched beside a row of sprouting herbs.

Iratus: "Victoria, it feels like forever since we’ve gone on a hunt together. I’m leaving for a few days, and the thought of being without you all is..."

She straightened, brushing dirt from her hands onto her apron.

Victoria: "Iratus, love, between the pregnancies and fieldwork, we can’t even begin to think about traveling off into danger."

Iratus: "I miss those times, it used to be us against the wilderness. Now I’m out there alone without any of my lovers' warmth."

Victoria: "How sweet. Maybe there will be a day you can just hire the others to do these tasks."

He chuckled.

Iratus: "I couldn’t ask others to do what I’m not willing to do myself."

Victoria: "Well, we invented currency for a reason."

Iratus: "Yeah, but everyone already makes money through common labor, and we don't really have the production to increase the wealth of our family."

Victoria: "Just institute taxes."

Iratus gave a hardy laugh.

Iratus: "We’re not exactly a governing body, Victoria."

Victoria: "There are no other nations. It’s just us and those wretches at Purple City. You’re the leader here, Iratus. Whether you like it or not, everyone follows your lead, with the kind of loyalty knights offer their monarchs."

Iratus paused for a second.

Iratus: "But they are all much older than us."

Iratus hesitated, glancing toward the settlement. "But they’re all older than us..."

Victoria: "And yet you’re the one making deals with foreigners, leading dungeon raids, and organizing scavenging missions." She stepped closer, her voice soft but insistent. "I heard the younger ones teasing, calling you a king. You may not claim a crown, but you are their ruler, love. You’ve earned that trust."

---

Chapter 779

Iratus: "I don't see how any of them would just loot the empty cities and expect me to have equal say in it without being there."

The racoon girl tapped her chin like she was in thought.

Victoria: "Resolutio would."

Iratus gave a frown.

Iratus: "Only because she’s looking for a glorious battle to end her days."

Victoria: "Echo, the two song girls..."

Iratus: "They do their jobs well, but only because I offer them a place within these walls."

Victoria: "The Winter Winds Clan?"

Iratus: "Those three are younger than us and are quite impressionable."

Victoria: "Salvos?"

Iratus: "I don't know."

Victoria: "The farmers?"

Iratus: "They are probably a lot more independent and wouldn't."

Victoria: "Oh, love. You can go adventuring today, but I'm telling you. You could leave some of the exploration to the others while you help us out around here."

After the talk, Iratus went back to see the group that was willing to go exploring with him. So far, Echo, Resolutio, Salvos, and somehow Malignitas from Last Mistake were all waiting by the makeshift gate. Once he visited the farmhouse to the east, Commercium was getting his gear on.

Iratus: "To what do I owe such a rare occurrence?"

Commercium: "I just need to get out there."

Iratus: "And leave your wife to care for three babies alone?"

Commercium: "I just need a break."

---

Chapter 780

The group traveled along the road before veering off onto a lightly tread path. Each member wore gambeson and bronze armor, save for the goat woman. Everyone was equipped and ready for combat.

Commercium: "Yo boss, we already looted the town over there."

Iratus: "Yeah, but it’s been a while. I want to see if any random travelers have passed through. Besides, we checked the houses and commercial district last time, but we didn’t explore the other buildings."

Commercium: "Because they were useless. Well, maybe now that we’ve got a smithy up and running, we can find a use for some of that junk."

The others chimed in with similar thoughts, voicing their skepticism and mild curiosity.

Salvos: "Honestly, there were some interesting smells I’d like to investigate again."

Echo: "Can’t say I’ve ever seen a town out this way."

Malignitas: "I’ve been through here once before. Nothing worth mentioning back then."

As they continued, the wooded path grew denser, the trees closing in and foliage thickening. The group hacked through underbrush and leapt over puddles that had swelled into murky pools. The air grew cooler, and the forest deepened into a shadowy labyrinth. After navigating around a large hill, they emerged to find the abandoned town.

The sinking afternoon light gave way to dusky hues, but their eyes were quickly drawn to bursts of vibrant floodlights. The town was alive with color, the lights flickering and dancing in all directions. The group stopped, gawking at the bizarre display. Their sharp animalistic ears picked up a distorted voice on a microphone, the distance muddling the words.

Voice: "Thank you for coming to the sixty-sixth annual Festival of Blood! Now let’s rock!"

And music erupted from the town.

It was a strange juxtaposition: a town seemingly frozen in time, its neat rows of vinyl-sided homes and brick facades framed by trimmed hedges and postage-stamp lawns. Telephone poles stretched along the sidewalks, their wires crisscrossing above. Rounded, brightly colored cars lay idle, though recent vandalism had left them scuffed and graffitied.

Billboards towered above, advertising bulky camcorders and the wonders of "compact disc players." The imagery was unmistakable—this town was a relic from Harmony, the otterfolk homeworld. Yet now, it bore the marks of hooligan occupation and reckless abandon.

Salvos: "Why is it that every time I explore a town with you, weird crap happens?"
