Black Hole: The Book of Iratus, Episode 77

Chapter 761

Iratus slept until the late morning and let everyone else start on the work. The only job left was to grab the morning milk from the cobalts but just before Iratus left with Salvos, the two idol girls, Fraus and Arcus came by. They were cleaned up and now wore new clothes, clearly from his wives stock.

Iratus's ear twitched as he tried to listin in.

Victoria: "So yeah, down in the tunnels we fought three of those things." Her raccoon tail flicked in joy.

The red panda girl waved her hand as a dismissive gesture.

Ignis: "It was the Anguis Marinus which I think tested us the most. The three ebonies were a dangerous bunch, but once we got into a better position, we killed the giant easy. Now, the battleship, Anguis Marinus, was just us running around and trying not to die."

The shark girl crossed her arms.

Resonantia: "Out of all our foes, I believe that one of them was the closest to death we have come. Victorium, I think his name was, and his warband was the most intense it has been. If we take into account the Sin Lords, then Kollektivi was the closest to death we have been."

The otter girl moved forward and gave Iratus a wave.

Aestus: "Iratus, thanks for bringing over new friends for us."

Iratus playfully: "I aim to please."

Iratus looked over the two former singers and now could finally see what they looked like. Fraus had a bright gray fur coat with a white underbelly with snow white hair that she had recently cut short and now with the proper light, could see her eyes were a deep blue.

Arcus, the fox girl, was slightly shorter then Fraus and while Iratus knew about her dark brown hair, her fur was the exact same color and her eyes were also a dull blue.

Chapter 762

Later in the day, the girls gathered in the communal kitchen, the room filled with the hum of quiet chatter and the scent of dinner meat hung in the air. Fraus and Arcus, the singers, joined the table, laughing and cooing at the babies in their laps. As the others finished eating, the conversation took a serious turn.

Fraus: "My, you have so many children, Iratus...but I have to ask, why are you and all your wives so young?"

Iratus tilted his head. "What do you mean?"

Fraus hesitated. "From my understanding, you’re all... below the usual age for this sort of responsibility."

Iratus raised a brow. "First of all, back in my time, fourteen was adulthood. Second, there’s no government here. This is my house, our house. We make our own rules."

Fraus frowned. "You don’t need laws to act morally. Children—at your age—shouldn’t have children of their own."

Iratus: "And when should we have them? We’ve done fine so far on our own."

Fraus: "Waiting until your bodies are stronger could save you all pain. It’s... harder, on everyone, when you start this early."

Victoria’s eyes narrowed, brown eyes flashing in disbelief.

Victoria: "Deciding when to have children is our business, Fraus. We make our lives out here."

Resonantia, the shark girl, looked Fraus over, a hint of annoyance in her eyes.

Resonantia: "We’ve managed just fine. Don’t come out to our side of the wilderness to talk down to us, not when we’ve built all this ourselves—and fought off monsters, bandits, warlords to keep it."

Arcus, the feline girl, only sighed, while the fox girl shrugged.

Arcus: "Hey, do what works for you. The whole 'multiple partners' thing is just...different. Can’t even imagine what it’s like."

Fraus cast her eyes downward, still holding one of the babies but visibly tense. The topic quickly faded, the kitchen noise returning to normal—but the tension hung on.

---

Chapter 763

Eventually the topic turned into the battles Iratus and the others fought, the gray masks, the many ebony creatures, the Japanese city, the hospital, and so many other battles.

The felinefolk down a cup of water before looking over Iratus and his four wives.

Fraus: "This world, the Nexus Prime, it is way beyond anything I could imagine."

Arcus: "I almost feel like the two of us barely have seen the worse that this place has to offer."

By this time, Malignitas and Liora, the feline and the deer girl respectively, came by for some meals. The deer girl meekly accepted a few prepared meals from Aestus while the one-eyed feline started to raid the pantry for food.

Some of the girls looked at him with some annoyance, but Ignis told them how helpful the black furred cat had been in the rice fields which Iratus smiled at. Before Malignitas left, he looked over at Fraus with his single brown eye and stopped for a second.

Malignitas: "That lady."

Fraus: "Uh, yeah. I'm that lady."

Malignitas: "It was a whole silver plated year when your songs were on the radio and it pissed me off."

Fraus: "Oh, you aren't a fan then." She gave a bit of a nervious laugh.

Malignitas: "What a small world we live in."

Aestus: "Or rather small space station!" She said with complete confidence.

Malignitas: "Sure kid."

Aestus: "Hey!"

---

Chapter 764

With the interlopers finally gone, the two idols, Fraus and Arcus, exchanged glances before turning back to face Iratus.

Fraus: "So, you’ve told us a lot about this place," she said thoughtfully, her gaze steady.

Arcus flicked her tail, sitting up straighter as her ears perked forward in attention.

Arcus: "Including... Hidden Lore," she finished with a sly smirk.

Fraus: "But you also mentioned something about the dangers of a city to the east?"

Iratus nodded, his expression growing somber.

Iratus: "Yeah. Purple City. One of their scout groups attacked us unprovoked, and when we tried to negotiate, their—well, I assume it was their leadership—refused to listen. They ended up killing one of our most beloved members. An intelligent AI we consulted predicts an all-out war within the next decade. Some might question its accuracy, but just based on our limited exposure to Purple City, I don’t have any doubt they’ll come for us."

He leaned back and let out a long sigh.

Iratus: "And once they realize what we have—our cow farm, copper mine, rice field, and everything else they lack—well, I can’t see them doing anything but attacking."

Arcus crossed her arms, her brow furrowing in disbelief.

Arcus: "I just don’t think people would go to war over something like that."

The room fell into a stunned silence, all eyes turning to the fox girl—except Aestus, who always carried a hint of naitivity in these kinds of discussions.

Fraus: "Arcus, my dear best friend, resources are a reason to wage war," she said gently, as though explaining something self-evident. She shifted her focus back to Iratus. "So... I take it it’s too dangerous to live around here, then?"

Iratus shrugged and Resonantia waved her hand to catch the feline's attention.

Resonantia: "Danger is everywhere. This tower may be the only real civilization we have left. You could try to flee, sure, but who’s to say how far you’d have to go to be out of Purple City’s reach?"

Ignis: "If this nefarious city were to capture our tower, it would signify but the first step in a more deliberate expansion. Indeed, they would likely lay careful plans to extend beyond their current borders and establish colonies to secure dominion over any further resources and territory. Should they succeed, we might witness an era of relentless conquest, fueled by their apparent ambition and disregard for diplomacy."

---

Chapter 765

The babies grew restless, their soft whimpers and tiny fists waving in the air as the girls gently ushered them out of the room, leaving only Victoria watching the conversation unfold. She leaned back against her chair, her arms folded, her gaze drifting thoughtfully as she listened in silence.

Meanwhile, the soft crackling of the nearby hearth filled the pauses between words.

Arcus shifted in her seat, her blue eyes wide and thoughtful before finally standing up and stretching her arms.

Arcus: "Then we run. Fraus and I spend so much time running from the ebony endlessly chasing us so what's a little more running, especially with time to actually sleep for once?"

Fraus trailed a finger along the table’s edge, tracing the worn lines etched by years of use. She looked up to respond.

She tightened her hands into fists, the faint glint of her claws catching the firelight. "I really feel like fighting those evil people."

Fraus: "But we always came back to the garden building. I just wanted a home, someplace to call my own. I like this little village you have made, and I'd like to partake in its bounty. Maybe it’s the wrath in me, but the thought of Purple City—after everything you've told us about them—coming by to steal what you’ve built here… I kind of just want to kill them."

Iratus leaned back and smiled.

Iratus: "At least the people in my future still embrace wrath."

Arcus raised an eyebrow and studied her friend.

Arcus: "We can’t stay here, though. Everyone here is still a stranger, and we don’t really know these people." Her voice softened as she added, "Besides, Fraus… I never realized you had such anger issues."

Fraus: "Felines like Iratus and me? We're angry folk, and we love it," she replied with a smirk. "As for staying here, well there’s no guarantee Purple City would even bother us; after all, they’re far away, right?"

Iratus: "A bit over thirty days."

Arcus glanced at the others, her expression wary.

Arcus: "I guess, but these people are still strangers."

Fraus with determination in her voice: "Like I said, I wish to have a home, and this bit of civilization is far more preferable than the dangerous wilderness."

Iratus's mouse tail gave a flick.

Iratus: "You could live in Last Mistake. I am sure you saw the abandoned town to the south from your journey to the hot springs cave. Some of the others live there, but you’d be independent and out of the way. It’s safe enough… most of the time,"

Fraus exchanged a look with Arcus and then back to Iratus.

Fraus: "The other girls told us about that place, yes… But what about the others who live around your tower? Would they mind newcomers nearby?"

Iratus met her gaze and then gave a slight nod.

Iratus: "We’re a community here, and we look out for each other. But this is my family’s tower, so I usually have the final say on what happens."

Iratus: "We are a community here, but this is my family's tower, so I generally have the final say on what happens."

---

Chapter 766

Arcus tilted her head, her fox ears twitching as a mischievous smile crept onto her face.

Arcus in a teasing tone: "Oh, so your a king?"

Iratus: "Uh, no. This is my tower; they chose to move in next to it. But since it's my land, they have to yield to me when I say so."

Arcus leaned forward, her eyes sparkling with a playful glint.

Arcus: "So... a king?" She smiled playfully.

Iratus stifled a sigh, trying to keep a straight face.

Iratus: "We are a community."

Arcus’s tail swished, clearly enjoying the exchange.

Arcus: "But you’re in charge."

Iratus: "Because it's my home and everyone else is asked to live on my property."

Arcus: "‘Property’ is a strong word when there isn’t any government… Oh, wait—you are the government," she quipped, barely suppressing a laugh.

Iratus: "I'm not sure what constitutes a government, but I guess when it comes to military force, I guess I am in charge." He gave a slight pause before continuing. "But just to be clear, the people to the south live by their own will."

Arcus: "Do they take part in the copper mine, rice fields, or whatever else you have?"

Iratus gave her a slight nod.

Iratus: "Yes, and they’re compensated by being part of the community. You saw the deer girl and the rude cat man come in for food earlier. They help us; we help them."

Arcus gave him an almost smug look, folding her arms.

Before Iratus could respond, Fraus, who had been watching their exchange with growing impatience, leaned forward, her blue eyes flashing with irritation.

Fraus: "Enough. Arcus is just messing with you, Iratus. Let’s get back to discussing housing arrangements."

She shot a pointed look at Arcus, who only shrugged, still grinning as she leaned back in her seat.

---

Chapter 767

Outside, Iratus and Victoria showed the two girls around. Victoria, for once, took an active part in the conversation, pointing out various buildings.

Victoria: "I think that's about it."

Fraus squinted toward a modest house tucked near the edge of the courtyard.

Fraus: "Wait, you didn’t mention that house over there," she pointed it out.

Victoria’s expression softened, her voice lowering.

Victoria: "Well, that was Venatio's house."

Fraus: "Oh, sorry."

Arcus tilted her head, glancing from the house to Victoria and then back at Iratus.

Arcus: "Uh, not to sound rude or anything, but does that mean it's free?"

Iratus gave a nervous cough.

Iratus: "I guess it is. It would be a waste not to put it to some use."

There was a brief moment of silence before the felinefolk spoke up.

Fraus: "I've noticed some graves nearby; which one is hers?"

Iratus: "The scouting party didn’t want to carry her body on the thirty-day return trip, so, we made a makeshift grave and gave her a proper send-off by burning her to ashes."

Victoria: "We probably should have gone through her home first, instead of leaving it untouched. She came from an advanced civilization; who knows what kind of knowledge or gear she might’ve left behind."

Iratus nodded.

Iratus: "Just be sure to take Studium with you when you do. Venatio was like a substitute parent to him."

Victoria turned to Fraus and Arcus.

Victoria: "I thought you two might prefer living in Last Mistake or somewhere a bit more distant. There are plenty of other locations nearby if you’d rather have some space."

Fraus gave a light shrug.

Fraus: "I am fine living at the tower."

Arcus: "I, too, am content to live under a monarch." She was unable to hide her amusement.

Iratus: "Dang it." He finished with a laugh.

---

Chapter 768

By the end of the day, Fraus and Arcus were able to get Venatio's home in a condition for them to move in. Studium found a Last Will, and Iratus listened to the short, "If I die, Studium gets all my stuff." left behind.

Arcus: "Does that include the house?"

Studium: "I'll sell it to you for a fair price. I got a lot of chores you can do for me over the next few days."

The next day, Iratus gave the girls some equipment, cloaks, one of his stitched tents, bottles, and a variety of weapons. The two girls sought out what they were good at, but physical labor was not their strong suit. The best they could do was help with the rice fields and skin-hunted animals for their pelts and meat.

On Day 189, as Iratus increased the demand for goods and products, people started to need more than just a shared pool of resources to function, and Iratus had to institute the use of coins. The only coins anyone had were the looted coins of the abandoned locations.

Malignitas: "Venatio left us a grand foundry to use. Why not use the smelter and create your own currency, bro?"

Iratus then got several moldings made and used precise weighing tools to create a whole new currency and made it similar to his own world's currency, with one side being a lion and the back being the tower Iratus lived in.

Iron coins, copper coins, silver coins, gold coins, and larger bricks of each metal. The system was really whatever people needed it to be, so prices were often just what people needed at the time, but iron coins, iron bricks, and copper coins were the normal coins spent.

This currency invigorated the community with people charging for their services and allowing people to create arts and crafts and sell their labor. Soon, the two singers were offering to sing for a price.

---

Chapter 769

Two days later, a crowd gathered to watch the two idols perform. Arcus took his seat at a piano patched up with wood glue and fresh polish, giving it a rustic but well-loved look. Despite its rough shape, it played perfectly, filling the air with music.

Fraus stepped forward, bowing gracefully.

Fraus: "Thank you for coming. Let's hit it!"

Arcus gave a steady somber tune to begin, and Fraus sang.

~La, la-la la-la la
~La, la-la la-la la
~La, la-la la-la la
~La, la-la la-la la la la

Arcus slowed the tune down.

~Steady... aim at the heart,
~Reach for... a dream of us as one.
~Hold close... the hope of a family...

Arcus picked up the tempo, and Fraus’s voice grew stronger

~Come back, don't leave; please, I'm right here!
~You dream of far-off places, leaving me behind,
~Here in the home that’s been ours all along.

The beat went steady, and Fraus’s tone became more pleading.

~We swore to marry... all alone on our island. Why would you... seek a future... without us?
~You once called our little world the perfect dream,
~So come, stay here—I’ll be your rock.
~The future we pictured, together and whole.

There was a brief instrumental pause with Arcus slowing down. Fraus’s voice softened, her words tinged with sadness.

~Did you hear me? I ran all this way...
~I love you too much to just let you go.
~I know it’s selfish, asking you to stay,
~But please don’t leave me here, watching you fade.

Arcus sped up once more, and Fraus sang out as hard as she could.

~Come back, don't leave; please, I'm right here!
~You dream of beyond, but my heart’s in this town.
~We promised each other, whatever would come,
~No city could love you, nor train bring you home.
~This humble life, though plain and small,
~Was where your happiest dreams took root.
~Don’t let go of our promised life; stay here, where we belong.
~La, la-la la-la la
~La, la-la la-la la
~La, la-la la-la la
~La, la-la la-la la la la

Arcus played a solo for some time before Fraus rapped up her song and when it ended. Everyone gave their cheers, for many had not heard such music while others waited years before they heard music of this caliber once again.

Chapter 770

On the morning of Day 192, Iratus took Echo, Fraus, and Arcus to the farmhouse.

Iratus: "Yup. There it is," he said, pointing ahead at the two modest houses and the large, fenced-in area where a herd of cows roamed freely. "These are the last people you have to meet."

Echo, still half-asleep, perked up, blinking in the morning light.

Echo: "Didn't you say that there was, like, some sort of robo man?"

Arcus: "Wait, what?"

Fraus: "That's news to us." she looked at Iratus with a bit of annoyance.

Iratus: "He’s long gone," he replied with a shrug. "We found his lab empty a while back. Seems like he took everything and left. We tried exploring, but the place is basically a pit now. Only a few rooms near the ground-level entrance are even safe to walk through."

Fraus’s tail lashed back and forth, her irritation visible.

Fraus: "You’re telling us more about this robot later!"

Iratus: "Hey, hey, I will."

As they continued down the road, an old, run-down RV came into view, its faded paint peeling in the sunlight.

Iratus: "That looks kind of familiar."

Echo: "Is that good or bad?"

Iratus: "Hopefully good… I guess."

Once at the house and the door opened, Commercium, the rabbitfolk, waved his hand.

Commercium: "My liege."

Iratus almost cracked a smile but quickly composed himself. Arcus, however, snickered, clearly entertained by his discomfort.

Iratus: "What’s with the title?"

Commercium: "Didn't you draw the borders with another tribe?"

Iratus: "Are you suggesting that I am some sort of lord because I negotiated with Purple City?"

Commercium tilted his head, giving Iratus a steady look.

Commercium: "You spoke on behalf of everyone here, including me. If we end up in a war, who commands us? Who controls the military might?"

Iratus shook his head, trying to hide his discomfort under a grin.

Iratus: "You are all independent of me."

Commercium: "And yet, when you need something done, like exploring a location, you call on us. Even the folks at Last Mistake respond to your requests. Like it or not, you’re the lord of this territory."

Iratus: "I... don't know how to respond to this, but thanks for the vote of confidence."

Commercium: "Vote? You were always in charge."

Iratus couldn’t hold back a laugh, shaking his head.

Iratus: "Dang it, man, you know what I mean."

When he turned back around, Arcus was watching him with a wide grin. Before he could defend himself, Commercium stepped forward.

Commercium: "By the way, there’s someone here I think you should see."

The group fell silent, exchanging curious glances as Iratus nodded, gesturing for Commercium to lead the way.
