(How this all began) Ok, so... this is a bit of a weird story, when I took my IPad to get repaired (I got locked out) I was in the shopping district and I decided to check out some toys, (not to buy any, just window shopping) when I came across a rather interesting set of toys all in Korean. I could not understand any of it, but fascinatingly, all of the characters were Dinosaurs wearing what I thought looked like diapers! So I snapped a few pictures and went home to translate my findings, and after a bit of digging around, I eventually learned more about what I was looking at. This was a Korean cartoon called Dinoman!
(What's Dinoman?) Dinoman is a cartoon where a group of Dinosaurs which I guess are called the 'Time Explorers'? according to the text on the toys. Where each episode centers around travelling back in time, and helping out some currently extinct animal or animals from a wide variety of time periods, whether it be as far as the Cambrian to as recent as the Holocene. They do this with a bunch of custom-built dinosaur-themed vehicles!
The team consists of: - Dinoman, a spunky red T-Rex with Super strength, and a love for action! - Cera Girl, a curious and brave cyan and pink Triceratops (presumably), who also has an interest in gardening and carrots! - Brontoman, a calm and kind Brontosaurus, who loves to draw and paint! He also frequently breakdances in the show! - Pteraman, A nerdy gray Pteranodon that has a love for reading, and is the smartest of the group! - Dr. True, the only adult in the group, a green Troodon (Although he looks nothing like one) who's responsible for giving the kids their missions, but doesn't go on them.
Also, they all wear diapers as their team uniform! yeah, they are diapers! And they all put them on at the start of each mission! including Brontoman who's clearly older than the others with a deeper voice, but he still dons' the diapers! Respect. So, why do they wear them? Or why are their uniforms diapers? Well... It's never bought up, they just are, I don't think they even use them. And you know what? I'm all for it! at least you can look adorable saving the world. And like many cartoon diapers, these ones are completely waterproof externally, got splashed? Or need to go swimming? it's alright, their diapers stay completely dry! Maybe they're some kind of Omni-Universal diaper.
The show is in the vein of a group of kids with shockingly advanced vehicles pulling off simple rescues across their world, which is a premise I like. However, a slight downside of this show is that for some reason, only two of the four kids will be sent on any of the missions with no backup, with one of them always being Dinoman himself. And only one of their four rides will be shown on a single mission, (not counting the time travel shuttle they use to travel between time periods)
It's strangely restrictive... I feel like the fun of shows like these, and why they can be great despite their formulaic nature, is you can tell a lot of potential stories with the premise, have a different mix of characters for each mission, to see how each character interacts with each other, you can write their relationship in pairs, see how their vehicles function as a unit, and for large scale events, you can send the whole team out on a huge scale rescue! The obvious comparison here is PAW Patrol, which did a great job at this in its earlier seasons, which often focused more on the pups as characters, and the creative uses of their kits before becoming the gimmick-ridden series it is now. But maybe I'm overthinking about a kids show that's built to sell toys, but I feel like, you could still at least put some soul into it, instead of just treating it like a cynical commercial.
(Can I watch it?) Yes! you can! I'll link the playlists where you can find all the episodes of the cartoon! There are two versions, the original in Korean, and an English Dub. But with downsides to each.
- The original Korean is the superior version, as it contains text that the English dub edits out or over, and the characters are also voiced significantly better. the downside is, there are no subtitles, so if you don't know Korean, you're kinda out of luck. Korean: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL66QCJEftOMvJgXk...
-The English dub is at the very least understandable to non-Korean speakers, but the voice acting is absolutely atrocious, as it seems as if the VAs clearly do not want to be there and voice acting, and are thus doing the bare minimum. So yeah. English: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL0DkuuSYPBo5O8Gp...
Also, Brontoman is my favorite! I love his design and his character, he's the only one in this picture where I did not make many significant changes to his design compared to Dinoman and Cera Girl, his headphones, hair tuft, cloud collar, and cape paired with the diaper just make him look so adorable! He's also a Sauropod, which are some of my favorite Dinosaurs!
Strangely, one of the pictures I took of the toys shows a possibly earlier design of the character? Where he appears as a Feral Brontosaurus with all his accessories. You can find all the pictures I took here: https://sta.sh/2224j8811skw?edit=1
