537 years ago, an odd-looking fish looked up at the falls leading to the Dragon Gate. Year after year, there was a contest to see who could swim up it - no one had done it in decades. While this wasn't the day the contest would happen, this fish felt like trying anyway. He'd trained most of his life in the hope of pulling this off, he could swim faster and longer than any of his friends. Every other time, he'd failed, but this time felt different. With the most confidence he'd ever had about this, the fish started swimming up the waterfall.
He'd grown to expect the immense force of the water by now; he already knew to swim with everything he had. The water almost seemed to bash at his body, stinging a little, like it was trying to stop him... But he fought, and fought, gradually getting higher up. Soon, he'd beaten his height record, but he was quickly growing tired... Not far above him though, he could see the bright red pillars of the gate, closer than he'd ever seen them before. His determination surged, and he swam the hardest he'd ever had, pushing the soreness of his body to the back of his mind as he went closer and closer... Then, suddenly, he leapt from the water.
Time seemed to slow as the fish arced toward the gate. Immense pride welled up within him, already certain that he'd finally done it! Nobody would believe him, but he didn't care any more, a wide smile on his face as he passed through the gate at last-
Then, an extremely strange feeling rushed through him. Parts of his body felt like they were stretching, while others contracting, both more than ever before. His body lengthened, as did his pectoral fins and face, a section near the end of his body bulging out as well. He gasped in surprise, which somehow didn't hurt - a pair of lungs was forming inside him, his gills fusing to the side of his neck before fading away into nothing... And he was getting bigger, too - MUCH bigger!
In just 10 seconds, the fish had entirely changed... He'd become a dragon! He floated in the air, panting in the most exhaustion he'd ever felt, incredibly dizzy as well. Strange thoughts were crossing his mind: Odd sounds that somehow had meaning, how he could use his new body... His still-fishy mind almost couldn't take it, and he absentmindedly floated himself away from the river, before he collapsed onto the ground from the overload of new thoughts.
Some time later, the dragon came to again. He looked around in confusion, and tried to think about what had happened... Nothing came to mind. For all he knew, he'd come into existence only seconds ago, yet with a fully-formed mind and even a knowledge of language. The dragon floated up off the ground as if he'd been using that ability all his life, and hovered through the forest he'd found himself in, looking for answers.
He eventually came across someone - once again, he didn't know who. He talked to them, they asked his name, and he realized he didn't have one... Or if he did, he couldn't remember it. He looked around, wondering what to say, before he looked up at the sky. It was late in the day now, and the sky looked beautiful... The clouds, as well... The dragon looked back at who he was talking to, having decided on what name he'd go by.
"...Cirrus."
