Top left: A 3x3 jigsaw puzzle with matching edges colored/labeled instead of shaped. Note each edge label appears twice.
Top right: A different assembly of the nine pieces on the left with edge-matching. Note that while every label from the left again appears twice, no instance comprises the same two halves. It can be shown easily that these are the only two solutions, and with more difficulty that this is the only 3x3 jigsaw (up to certain definitions of when two jigsaws are "the same") where these conditions all hold.
Bottom: An attempt at illustrating the nine pieces so that each assembly gives a coherent picture-- an "illusion" or "ambiguous image," to use applicable common terms. Left: a headshot of Gordon duPorsch, facing left. Right: a headshot of a... koala... bat... thing, facing right.
I took issue with Matt Parker and Steve Mould using AI. (link if it's demanded) Me, I used the spray-can and rotation tools in Paint. Maybe I could have tweaked the pictures if I had the tools to change the pieces' shapes, but I'm not a strong artist to start with.
