KHSU is, and has been for decades, part of the US's closest equivalent to the BBC, insofar as being a public broadcasting entity, known as NPR, except it's considerably decentralised, and not relying solely on government funding. That said, NPR had the broadcast rights to the radio series (and the TV counterpart, PBS, had the broadcast rights to the 1981 TV series), which is how I got exposed to H2G2 and Douglas Adams. :)
Considering the accomplishments the radio series had at the time (first in stereo, and it kept the Radiophonic Workshop from being discontinued, which Doctor Who fans are certainly thankful for!), I can understand why it certainly be required listening! ;)
